Maybe it's just guilt from yesterday's gorge-fest, but we think that an exercise ball placed in the right space actually becomes an interesting sculptural object. It can serve as extra seating when needed and will strengthen your core a lot better than flopping on the couch will. What do you think? Is there a place for exercise balls outside of the gym?

I think it looks like you need a mini home gym..or a storage room.
I've had an exercise ball around for a few years, sometimes in the living room. I use it to sit at the computer sometimes and it has served as extra seating, actually, for the young adults in my family; they don't mind at all.
My exercise ball was purchased cheap at Home Goods and is the color of an internal organ. So not so much on display, no.
"Is there a place for exercise balls outside of the gym?"
Yes.
The Garage, the Attic, a closet, the store where it came from...
I already have it in the living room :)
I guess if you have to, it's nice to see examples of how to integrate exercise equipment into a room, but it's not ideal. And I'd never deliberately coordinate a room with exercise equipment like in #3.
no.
anyone ever notice the static lint and yukkies that are attracted to those things? if you leave it out in your living room, you will.
hey jeri- neat product- it's be REALLY funny to paint a giant mural of an ice cream cone or cupcake & then use that loop to store a bright red one just at the top of the mural - the cherry on top! hilarious! ...almost makes me want to exercise... lol
Mine is semi-translucent white. Goes well with my white sparsely decorated studio. A little thinking ahead.
I love it. If I didn't have a dog, I'd stick it right in the middle of my living room. Maybe my office..... Hmmm...
There it would be every time you walked through the room reminding you that you have not exercised yet today. I suppose that is a good thing. Or just one more thing to feel guilty about.
Heard a big crashing sounds from the room where my friend kept her exercise ball..well my 17 pound dog was in there thinking it was a big soccer ball and basically was thrashing the room with this amusing toy he found.
I like the ball chair in the fourth picture. But probably prohibitively pricey. The wood floors and sunshine are nice, too.
I obsessively hide certain traces of modern life such as ubiquitous electrical cords, chargers and other clutter. But I've learned to live with my exercise ball out in the open. As much as I enjoy a neat, minimalist living space, I am also the proud owner of a nicely defined set of abs (if I do say so myself). While against my better style judgment and predilection for neatness, my very obvious exercise ball is easily accessible and hard to ignore, which helps ensure I use it on a regular basis.
no, there is not.
I use an exercise ball instead of a chair at work, and I love it!
I have one in my living room. My hubby likes to stretch out his back and I do ab exercises while watching TV. We also use it as an ottoman and fight like two kids on who has rights to it. ("I called it!" or "but you gave up your rights when you got up to go to the bathroom!") If we put it away, we'd probably never use it.
I like the matte navy balls.
I have a bright pink one in my home office in lieu of a chair (exercise balls are a godsend for bad backs), but said office has a door on it. The navy matte ones look relatively presentable, though.
Um, nope...the giant exercise ball does not make good home design.
It's one thing to have it out if you use it. It's another thing to kid yourself that it's a design plus.
I've got one in my family room. Rarely do we use it for actual excercise, but my 18-month old thinks it is cool that he has such a huge ball to push around, and when folks come over, there is always someone who wants to sit on it and bounce rather than sit in a "normal" chair.
Noooo! My college roommate had one of those things and it just got in the way all the time.
I've used one as a desk chair before, and as far as exercise equipment goes it is smaller, less obtrusive and more modular than say and exercise bike, or a tread mill.
Anything looks TDF next to two polished Hudson chairs.
Though they're more attractive than the shiny ones, the matte navy balls look like they'd be great at collecting and showing off light-colored pet fur, human hair, dust and lint.
mine is tucked into the corner near my bookshelf - kinda like photo 2. so it's not a focal point and not intended to be one but it's not totally hidden. but knowing it would be out in the open i did at least buy one in a coordinating colour to my decor.
truth be told i live in a small space and i think it's too big to fit in the closet (though I haven't tried) and it would be too much of a hassle to go and get it from my storage room every time i need it. if i had an extra bedroom it would probably be in there.
I have one in my dorm that doubles as emergency seating. But I don't think I'd have one in my real living room.
I don't think having one out in the open would be any sort of design no-no, as long as it's not a disgusting color or in anyone's way. I think it looks fine in picture #2, out of the way, subtle, but completely out of place and jarring in picture #1.
Is everything "by design"?
I have an exercise ball, no extra closet, and I use it every day. Therefore it leaves in the room where I use it, the living room. It has nothing to do with design. Just life.
I like the silver ball. Trouble is, the color of the ball indicates the size of the ball, which matches the size of the person (height). Mine is a hideous bright blue.
If they came in colors like taupe or greige or white or brown or black, I wouldn't mind keeping it in a corner of the room.
for a moment i thought that "footwear's" post was a poem about what else not to have in your living space. give me the exercise ball over the cheap tiffany jewelry and sports jersey!
I have never though about using my home fitness equipment as a functional piece in my living room but I kind of like it. It adds a nice modern feel to the room in addition it provides more seating. Who knows maybe I will even buy a couple more balls for my living room.
