Did you ever wish that your shelving could expand along with your book collection? If so, here are some clever solutions to this problem — expanding bookcases!
1. Growing Cabinet by Yi Cong Lu.
This bookcase features very large '"drawers" that you can pull sideways to expand the space outwards. Then you can fill the space left free by the drawer as well as the space inside the drawer.
2. Platzhalter Bookcase by Farsen / Schöllhammer
This standard-looking bookshelf begins to expand as needed. It splits in half where the hidden boards begin to reveal.
3. REK Bookcase by Reiner de Jong
The REK bookcase expands from a solid-like shape to an open bookcase of intricate design. The shelves are designed to each fit in the negative space of the shelf next to it. The resulting design is an interesting geometric pattern.
4. Staircase Bookcase by Levitate Architects
And if those options fail, you can always add more shelving to every surface possible! These staircase bookshelves are a great idea!

White Enamel Flatwa...
number 1: while an interesting concept.. looks a mess.
#1 it's funny -- it looks like it could topple if not pulled correctly.
#2 is kind of scary. #4 looks like a dirt and dust magnet.
# 3 is really nice --I'd like that.
#3 - the Rek Bookcase is the best of the lot. What a beautiful design. What I do question is what it looks like when parts of the unit are "closed" and "opened" for variety....
i always wonder if it makes sense. It would go tot he extrnded version immediately, so why not get a big enough one right away? ;-)
