Kirsten is an interior designer and style blogger who's own home is an inspiring space she shares with her husband Josh and son Jett in Utah. Her living room, in particular, is fabulous and family-friendly at the same time. With her sharp decorator's eye, Kirsten has mixed and matched mass-market pieces with one-of-a-kind finds, creating a space that's comfortable and chic.
Shop for a sofa that resists stains.
They carry a few basic sofas that can be slipcovered, in case you've got a small child and you're worried about stains. This is the Comfort Square Sofa in Twill Caramel, $999 - $2,099. The cover can be customized with one of 80 different fabric options.
With DIY curtains, you can highlight a favorite fabric.
Anyone with basic sewing skills can make their own curtains. (For a good tutorial, click here.) Kirsten made hers using Kalah Blue Fabric ($24/yard) from Calico Corners — other good resources for patterned fabrics can be found here.
Pillows add color and pattern for less.
This huge handmade site is a good resource for unique pillows crafted with popular fabrics by designers like Amy Butler, Kelly Wearstler, and Lotta Jansdotter. This Kelly Wearstler Imperial Trellis Pillow sells through Etsy shop Decorative Instincts for $65.
Crate and Barrel
Basic solid-colored pillows help to offset more elaborate patterns. Shop for them at the usual subjects: Crate & Barrel, West Elm, Pottery Barn, or Target. Shown: Hayward Navy 18-inch Pillow at C&B, $24.
With all the navy blue in Kirsten's room, a shot of one contrasting color (in this case, yellow) makes a huge difference. This Yellow Rosettes Decorative Pillow ($20) is part of the DwellStudio line for Target, an inexpensive source for trendy home accessories.
One oversized object brings balance to a room.
Maison de Kristine
Kirsten's clock is a discontinued model from Pottery Barn, but online store Maison de Kristine has a nice selection of similar oversized clocks inspired by European train stations. Shown: Bond Street French 31-inch Clock, $280.
Customize your lampshades for a tailored look.
Kirsten's lamps came from Home Goods, but if you're looking for a specific color and style and don't want to shop the floor, online stores like Lamps Plus allow you to design your own styles. This Custom Lamp with a navy blue shade sells for $130.
Opt for a no-VOC paint brand to improve indoor air quality.
They've collaborated with Benjamin Moore to offer a line of no-VOC Aura paints designed to match their furniture collections. In her living room, Kirsten used Benjamin Moore's Hazy Skies Aura Paint, $62/gallon.
