The sight of an abandoned home or building makes my heart ache a little. But it also stirs my imagination much more than a manicured, lived-in home. Apparently 9,928 Facebookers feel similarly.
I live within walking distance of Jamaica Pond in Jamaica Plain and for the first eight years that I lived here I used to love to dawdle in the vicinity of the abandoned Pinebank Mansion, which used to sit atop a "bluff" at the pond. Sadly the remains of the Mansion were demolished in 2007. Check out pinebank.org for history of the Pinebank Mansion.

Thank you for this link! I LOOOOOVE creepy old abandoned houses and buildings. I've always wanted to start collecting my own photographs of these structures, but I never seem to have a camera handy when I see one.
There are some astounding abandoned houses in St. Louis. There was one on Grand just north of Highway 44 that had the most amazing details... It was hard to believe anyone had said, "I don't want to live here anymore." The neighborhood was fairly run-down, but that house! Amazing!
There are also some interesting abandoned farmhouses along highway 63 in Missouri. It's always a little startling to see Gothic Revival accents on old wooden farmhouses.
Picture #4 is creepy as heck.
I love those red shingles!
i love the ominous sky peeking out behind the first house
Very cool. The second one reminds me of the Klopecks' house in "The 'Burbs."
This topic/theme must be in the air. I bookmarked this last week--and they're for sale.

Flickr has some great abandoned house groups. I love them too, but then again i love urban decay as well. I just like the old and forgotten I guess.
Awww, they just need love.
hauntingly beautiful.
Living in Detroit, I can't look out of my house in any direction without seeing abandoned houses. I often sit on the porch dreaming up restorations in my mind. If only I had the funds...
I love photos like this! They always make me imagine the people who use to live there and the circumstances under which they abandoned the home.
This reminds me of a book I have called Bermuda Ruins (I am from Bermuda) I forget the author's name but he has captured hundreds of images of abandoned structures around the island. The photos are beautiful and it makes me sad that many of the structures have since been razed.
I've always loved this one:

Great post, gets the imagination working.
the HDR-photography of the first two made me laugh... reminded me of a gizmodo editor calling the results of the technique "clown vomit": http://tinyurl.com/ol8qgn
If you are fascinated with abandoned structures and are unfamiliar with the site Opacity (www.opacity.us) you have been missing out and I highly recommend you visit!
Tom Kirsch, aka Motts, is an amazing photographer of abandoned buildings around the world and has documented some of the most impressive (and heartbreaking!) sites you'll ever encounter. I can't get enough of his work!
There's a wonderful young photographer named Megan Baker who specializes in abandoned houses.

I believe she's still a teenager. Lots of talent!
Yes, there's definitely a lot of magic around abandoned (/forgotten) places...
"Urban Explorers" worldwide devote lots of time & energy to such buildings - and you'll find tons of blogs and sites displaying their exploration galleries: Awesome pictures, highly addictive stuff... :)

Haha, they've been all visiting one of my all-time favourite places: The abandoned clinic "Beelitz Heilstätten" near Berlin...
I just love this guys!

Yeah, well...
I live in a small town, very rural part of Minnesota. There are lots of abandoned house on old farmsteads. They make me sad, really. I always wonder what they were like when they were new and there were families living in them. What stories they could tell.
Abandoned houses make me sad as well, how can someone just leave a house? My grandma passed away 5 years ago and we are still trying to sell the house, it's amazing how fast houses deteriorate when no one is there to care for them.
Wasn't there a post on here recently about a whole abandoned island near New York City?
One good creepy house in my area is the home of the Janesville Doll. People live there and it is not in disrepair, but how can you resist the creepy hanging doll in the window? http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/4738550.jpg
redneckmodern and whiteforest, yoiu both took the words out of my mouth. I live just 50 miles north of the D, in Downtown Flint and we have plenty of amazingly beautiful, abandon houses that are in desperate need of some major TLC.
I've been trying to find my an old rich boyfriend who will 'loan' me funds to fix up these homes-so far, no luck.

I was just about to post about the old Worcester State Hospital that is soon to be demolished.......(i do not believe they have done it yet). It is most likely on the newenglandruins web site. If you live in the area and are into old and creepy buildings , the trip is worth it. check it out!
Martin Scorsese wanted to film a movie there a couple of years ago and the city of Worcester , Massachusetts said NO ! crazy , huh?
The old and haunting are so inspiring to me..Driving through the back roads of Ontario i have found many that have scared the wits out of me.
Here is a link to my photography website that features some more homes and locations.

Great pics! I love abandoned views.
And, if you like this photos, maybe you will also like my collection of abandoned Saint-Petersburg houses (from Russia).
Hey mac207, thank you for mentioning me! I am an avid reader of apartment therapy but hardly ever post. I'd love for my work to be posted here sometime, and I think I have a great story for the editors! It involved something I found on the site through the classifieds. I should get in touch with them I suppose. :)
