This is our favorite measuring tape. We use it around the house and find it crucial for space planning. We like this Stanley FatMax tape for a few reasons...
The FatMax Tape Rule is 1 1/4" wide, which makes it easier to use when measuring ceiling heights, for instance. Thinner tapes can buckle when you're trying to measure heights. And we've found this 35-foot length to be perfect; the more common 25-foot length is often too short for overall measuring. Does anyone else keep a tape measure around the house? This one sells in the neighborhood of $30.

I keep two tape measures at home and one mini tape measure in my purse so if I happen to be out and find something I want to bring home ASAP, I'm armed and ready to make sure it will fit in my space.
I have three tape measures, though two of them are dressmaker tape measures.
i've got a large 25' stanley, although it's not the fatmax since i didn't need one that big. instead of the standard switch to lock and retract, mine has a bottom plate that tilts slightly, so you pull it out, it stays, you just put a little pressure on the back and it retracts, great for working one handed.
if you're out and about and need to measure things, know how big your hands are. i know what i make the L shape with my thumb and pointer it is about 7 inches across, and if i stretch my pinky and thumb only out, it is right about 8 inches. great reference point, and you've always got it with you!
I have quite a few--one is 25' which buckles like crazy when I try to do anything over about 5'. Maybe I'll have to look at this one. I have a short one like BSmelz--which I now have in my purse (was browsing for lamps this weekend), but usually don't. And, I have 2 sewing tape measures.
...have the 25' fatmax and also a laser tape. both are godsends -- though i tend to use the fatmax just a bit more.
Tape measures are like scissors around my house....I have a bunch but I can never seem to find them when I need them!
I use the 35' @ work. It is the only tape measure that can stand out 13' and withstand the mud and muck I work in. They are pricey but well worth it.

I have an Ideal Auto-Lock tape measure. It glides very smoothly and is locked by default so you pull the tape out and it stays out until you press the button. Good quality and easy to use for $17.
