The Joni Mitchell of pillow design. I had the good fortune of meeting Lauren Saunders at ICFF two years ago. It was her first year taking a booth there, and she sat through all four long days like an angel, showing off her stunning hand loomed pillows and custom textiles to the crowd. Seems like it was a good idea to take that booth, because she got picked up by Room & Board afterwards and now her unique designs are much more available via their shops and the web (they are also available at all these smaller shops)...

Lauren's designs are notable for the fluidity and organic nature of her patterns, which seem really difficult to achieve in weaving on this scale. Also, the mixture of her yarns is impressive, with big bushy yarns contrasting against flat hard yarns, all of which give the pillows three dimensions of pattern. Check out these ingredients:
"...various natural fibers such as wool, cotton, mohair, llama, and sometimes a bit of alpaca."
And then there are the colors. Earthy 70's oranges, greens, blues, greys and browns and even whites. These have the genes to become classics, fitting in comfortably across a spectrum of decors, but adding just the right touch of color and sophistication for many years.
Congratulations to Lauren for taking her vision to the big time. All of us at AT look forward to seeing what happens next.
