Location: Lake Merritt, Oakland, California
I submitted an application to rent my apartment, sight unseen, as I was making a rather speedy move from the East Coast. (Small world alert! One of our House Tour participants, Colleen, lives in Fay's old DC apartment! - Janel) I was instantly smitten by the charming elements of the pre-war building: hardwood flooring, crown molding, cut glass doorknobs and the working fireplace. If these elements weren't enough, the apartment has large paned windows on three sides that flood the place with natural lighting all hours of the day.
My favorite room in the apartment is the living room. As the sunsets one can sit and watch the skies over San Francisco turn pink as they begin to match the color palette of the room. I also love the large painting by Woodward Payne, a local artist, that hangs in my bedroom. I believe in making ones bedroom a calm sanctuary, and the rolling hills and sky in the painting make me feel like I am in a spa.
The biggest influence in the decor has actually been the light in the room. I chose paint colors after watching how the changing light affected each option and went for something subtle but warm. Apart from a few key pieces, most of the furniture has been collected and found at various secondhand stores. The built-in cupboards also heavily influences the furniture choices – there was limited wall space not much needed in the way of storage.
