Name: Felix (14 months)
Location: Amsterdam (pictured at a small park in De Pijp)
Favorite Family-Friendly Place To See or Thing To Do Here: So many...the parks were amazing. Lot's of ducks to feed and fun playgrounds. We even managed to find a lovely, organic goat farm to feed goats. The city is very child friendly. All the cafes and even bars were most welcoming to Felix. We did only venture out in the day time mostly, but it was really family oriented.
Best Tip for Traveling with Kids: Be laid-back (don't expect to cram loads in each day) and research the places you are going really well (find parks, lakes, zoos, etc). Stopping for snacks a lot as well!
Favorite Way to Make it Feel Like Home: We camped in Belgium and the Netherlands...so we made the tent as cozy as possible. Just make your child feel like they are part of the plans and it won't matter too much that you are not at home. It is an adventure after all.
An Item you MUST Take With You While Traveling: Well for the age of Felix at the time of traveling...a baby sling and reins.
Thanks Olivia!

So, I am reading about all these adventures and I am impressed. But, can someone please tell me what you do after your child's bedtime? I guess you can just hang out outside the tent in a campsite, but if you are in Amsterdam, for example, and your kid goes to bed at 7:30 or 8, what do you do? Hang out in a dark hotel room? I'm not trying to be snarky- I really want to know. I miss my days of traveling pre-kids!
ek76:
We either get a babysitter, or we stick our baby in a super comfy stroller (that he doesn't mind sleeping in) and we all head out!
Also traveling with others has worked really well for us. We can either take turns watching the kids, or even we all stay in alteast we have company for food and wine and make a night out of it!
Have travelled many times and almost never spent the evening alone and bored in our hotel room. Good luck!
Well for us, on this occasion...it was pretty laid back. We headed back to the tent around dinner time, made food and I just went in and read to Felix. Or if we ate in town, we got him ready for bed and drove back to the the camp with a sleepy baby....sleeping in the car. Perfect. That has been our camping trick. Car ride. But if a hotel is involved, we usually relish the idea of a chilled night in after running around a city all day with a kid. Some of my friends rent apartments instead of hotels (cheaper in a lot of places) when they travel, which I think is a really good idea. Then you can have a nice meal and you have a room for the child to go for normalcy and you can relax and get refreshed for the next day. I think kid travel is all about being flexible and enjoying what you can. For us, sitting around playing cards and having some local booze at the campsite is a highlight. I suppose every age has it's challenges, but we have been on a few adventures with Felix and those tricks have worked for us so far.
ek76 - I have thought the same thing. I love traveling with child but there is something to be said about getting to know your travel destination at night, esp in Europe! I like the idea of going out with child and also traveling with others. I wouldn't be comfortable with a babysitter in an unknown place - I'm barely comfortable with using one here at home! Great conversation - thanks for bringing that up & thanks for responses too!
Thanks for all your responses- I hope more ideas continue to come in!
