Halloween is just around the corner and your kids are probably already talking about costumes. Bloggers Kristin and Jessica don't wait for All Hallows' Eve to really bring it on the costume front. Cinema-lovers, they started making outfits for their kids inspired by some of their favorite movies.
They call their blog series Film Petit and have taken on some of their favorites like The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Amelie. Kristin says they do it "mostly for their own amusement" and they've recruited some readers to take part who have begun posting their own film-inspired creations on the Film Petit Flickr page (including costumes inspired by Pretty in Pink and My Neighbor Totoro).
Whether you're looking for costume inspiration or just want to put a smile on your face, check out Film Petit on Kristin's blog, Skirt as Top and Jessica's blog A Little Gray.

I think this is amazing, but where in the world do parents find time to do all of this? I work full time and have two young daughters. When I get home at night, it is all I can do to get them fed, cleaned and spend some good 'ol fashioned quality time together. After they go to bed...I crash. Ha! These blogs make me feel inadequate and I'm not really sure why. :)
Heck yeah-- because what toddler doesn't love Life Aquatic? As long as you obey that other movie rule--they do one for mommy, to pay the bills. The next one's all for them. You get your Hunter S. Thompson, but the little guy should be allowed to follow up with Capt. Jack Sparrow. It's only fair.
Is it just me or is the first picture of the kids in masks scary as hell? Maybe it's a good thing that I don't have kids (and don't want them). This picture reaffirms my decision.
The fox costumes look like for the original Wicker Man movie. Creepy.
Oh how adorable! I love it!
Haha, wow. I loved Drive, but I don't know that it is a movie I would want my very young child to see/emulate in a costume. Call me old fashioned, but I think I'd wait until my kid was at least 13 before I let them experience the joys of watching a woman's head get blown to pieces/a man beat another man's face into pulp. And since I find putting kids in costumes that I picked out for them pretty creepy (they are people, not dolls...?), I will pass on that one.
The Zissou one is pretty cute, though, and those Totoro ones? Adorable.
Yeeah, a kid in a Drive-inspired costume is one (small) step up from the mother who dressed her daughter like Julia Roberts' hooker character. Inappropriate.

What a cool way to combine a love of film+sewing! I'm sure these cute kids aren't ACTUALLY watching the movies! All they know is that their moms spend their own free time whipping up extraordinary clothing for them. My kids would love that (since they never want to take off even the shabby pj pants I've managed to sew for them:) Congratulations, ladies, on a creative and unique way to continue celebrating and sharing the things you love.
Love this! We used to do this in Fashion School as an exercise, watch movies and get inspired to draw a collection. I love that they used it for their kids. The costumes all came out great and from some of my all time favorite movies too! Good work ladies and thanks for the inspiration :)
Oh goodness - how adorable, this is a great idea! What kid wouldn't like to don a fun fox mask and "fancy" clothes, or hang out at the beach in comfy shirt and shorts, or get to wear a killer jacket with a scorpion on the back?! The beauty of these outfits is that they use clothes that the kids probably already have with the addition of one or two more pieces.
And for what it's worth - these seem like 2 caring, creative moms having fun - it is just SILLY to think that the kiddos are actually watching the movies or even know they are dressing up similar to a character. All they know is "hey, mom made me something really fun and we are getting to spend some fun quality time together." Also, some people watch TV to relax, some read, some sew or craft - it's not a contest, it just is what it is! - I think it's great :)
I love the creativity! What amazing skill to pull this off! Well done :)
