My new book comes out in just 5 4 — count 'em — days and so far the early reviews are pretty darn nice. Tina from Swiss Miss texted me: "Waaaaaaaah! I just got the book! The photos are "amazing"!!!!, and Lockhart Steele from Curbed emailed me: "WOW!" After a year of work and waiting, it feels pretty good to finally have people actually experiencing the book, and I'm looking forward to the launch party and tour that starts next week. For today, I thought I'd put together a little tour through the making of the book with some pics that I took as well. Enjoy!
All the folks you see in the following pics are the folks in the book or part of our crew, which starred Jim Franco (photographer) and Joe Maer (stylist).

All the homes were small, so this is a typical scene: we're in the living room getting a shot of Swiss Miss's bedroom!

Me and Bethany Obrecht mugging outside her home in Brooklyn. It was coldddddd.

This is a final shot of Kelly Giesen's amazing white bathroom. In this version you can see the camera in the mirror. :-)

Kelly had me try out my yoga legs on her plexiglass chair. She LOVES plexiglass.

This is a panorama of working in Alex McClain's amazing apartment in an old bank building in downtown Los Angeles.

This is the entrance to Michelle and Tracy McCormick's apartment in Los Angeles...

And this is looking in the other direction. They live in one of the oldest apartment buildings in the city!

Mat Sander's apartment in the West Village was THE SMALLEST apartment, but we got a lot of people in there and even had of visitors while shooting. That's Mat sitting in the chair to the right.

This is in Noah Posnick's apartment near NYU in Manhattan, with Noah kicking back after the shoot. They were each AT LEAST four hours long, and some went to six.

This is at Jennifer Ward's in Brooklyn - she was showing me her tall shoe storage invention that uses a window shade to hide everything.

I LOVED this ladder at Kelly Giesen's and blogged it.

I love this picture of Timothy (Charles and Hudson) and Laura Dahl and me, standing outside their home in LA. Check out that foliage!

And one more: Michelle and Tracy's remarkable living room in LA...

the book looks great. looking forward to seeing it.
I'm excited... it looks wonderful! Thanks for the peek, and congratulations!
Love that shade idea - very creative and functional!
I can't wait to see your book!
Can't wait to the book comes out. I've ordered a copy but it doesn't come into UK until 18th May so I've got to wait that little bit longer. I'm sure it'll be worth it.
I already pre-ordered it, can't wait!!!
Hey, it's been reviewed on the Canadian newspaper, the Globe and Mail: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/real-estate/small-spaces-are-cool/article1559077/ ... Toronto is our version of a big city, after all. Makes sense.
Congrats Maxwell!
anyone know the name of the tree in the second to last picture? It's beautiful.
mntngr - I think it's a fiddle leaf fig. They are really beautiful and I've usually seen them as a house plant instead of outside, but it looks great against the fence.
This email clip with images "set me free!" Insider track photos disclose the not so obvious...capturing these spaces takes hours and hours. And there's a million super talented space makers out there blowing the design reality to amazing standards! I can't wait to get that book!
A small cool girl from sausalito!
I have been going back to the sneak peeks several times a week, I am so excited about the book. One of my daughters gave me a Mother's Day card with the Amazon pre-ordered -"The Big Book of Small Cool.." receipt inside. Talk about excited ! It will be in my hands on 5/13/10 ! I am waiting excitedly !!
