Walk Score has been a great online tool to find walkable and transit oriented neighborhoods to limit your carbon footprint. They now have a great tool perfect for apartment hunters looking for a short and easy commute: Apartment Search. If commute time is just as important as the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, you'll definitely want to check out this tool.
Simply type in the address of where you commute, and select your form of transportation, then filter your search by adjusting the maximum amount of time you'd be willing to commute as well as the desired Walk Score of your new neighborhood. After this has been done you'll see a map of all the available apartments meeting your search requirements, as well as a list of the apartments with a photo, rent, bedroom and commute time.
Click on an apartment you're interested and you'll find more details about the property including commute options, nearby amenities, and direct links to the property listing and landlord contact information.

Sprout Side Table
I just tried this for an area I'm considering moving too. It put way too much emphasis on highways, and all but ignored major city streets. There's a major university campus that is within about a ten to fifteen minute drive and it didn't identify an of the apartments around it.
I actually really like that site. I've used it to scrutinize a few neighborhoods in the suburbs that I've been considering moving too and was able to rule some out. I never realized how important a walkable neighborhood is to me until recently.
