After years of living in some extremely small spaces (hello, tiny San Francisco loft studio!) I have really enjoyed spreading out in just over 1,000 s.f. I have room for my desk, and also a whole room devoted to a studio where I can really spread out! So why do I always end up in this little corner of my house!?

Seemingly every day, as I am writing my blog posts and working on the computer, I end up in this little, cozy corner of my home. It's not very ergonomically correct, and it's not particularly conducive to work, but it's my favorite spot!
I think it's because of the way the light pours into the room in the morning. It's the soft velvet of the couch that I proudly scavenged on Craigslist for $50 and breathed new life into! It's because I get to be near my Saarinen side table, one of the only things that I didn't thrift or scavenge but splurged on at a sample sale. It's also because I won't miss a beat around the house. I'm out in the open ready to see and hear everything going on in my home. Oh, and it's the closest spot in the house to the coffee maker...let's not discount that fact.
Either way, it's my little corner of the house, and I gravitate towards it. I plan on trying to cultivate a few more corners, if not only to "get my money's worth" with all of this space! But I don't really mind how often I work here. I might even make a new throw pillow for my corner!
Where is your corner? Do you end up in the same spot in your home time after time? Do you have to fight your significant other or pet for it? Give it up for cozy corners!

Um, your couch is awesome! I think I would spend lots of time there too! In our house it's the kitchen. We spend so much time in there just talking - most of the time without cooking. I guess it just feels comfortable in there.
I know what you mean. I recently moved to a bigger apartment, but I still live a totally bedroomcentric lifestyle.
I'm always in my home office - either working or procrastinating working. I feel like I haven't seen my living room since I bought proper office furniture. Too bad, because it's cute out there.
I really like that shelf, it looks so much sturdier than what you usually see in that style. Where did you get it?
I totally agree about that shelving. Where is it from?
I have a sofa table behind my sofa (go figure), and it's a perfect spot for my laptop, with a perfect view of the TV, the fountain outside, and it's 5 steps from a refreshment.
I'm always in the same spot. I just steal one of the armedTolix chairs from my dining table right behind me to sit at. They are more comfortable to me than any other chair in the house.

I've since sold those chairs, but it's a perfect view of my "spot"
Some would say that that corner feels right because having no entrances out of sight behind you is good feng shui. I'm no feng shui fan, but that's one guideline that works well for me with desks and beds as well as seating. I spend much of the day in my home office, but it has no room for a dog bed. So, I also spend much of the day in my living room. It's cheery and has excellent natural light. I can see and hear everything around me from there, too. It's so peaceful that my dogs and I occasionally nap through thunder storms there!
I actually make a conscious effort to use all of the spaces in my home and make sure that they all "work" for me and feel good. I figure that there's no point in having the space if it isn't being used. Plus, different rooms feel better/worse depending on the mood I'm in.
I definitely spend most of my time at my desk when I'm at home. We even just curtained off part of the living room so it could be closer to an actual "office". The chair is not very comfortable, but it's right next to the window, and my computer, so it's where I gravitate towards. Definitely know what you mean!
Totally. With about 1900 sq ft, I end up spending 90% of my time in one little 8x8' room. It has big windows on two sides and a view of the creek and woods, but you can see them from other rooms, too. It's easy to heat in the winter, but in summer? It must just be force of habit. Definitely, sometimes it feels crazy.
I'm constantly in my home office even when I'm not working. I love the setup of my living room but will somehow end up reading a magazine on the futon in my office. I think it's because all my stuff if there, computer, sewing table any project I may be working on.
i definitely have my corner of the couch. when we have guests i feel weird when they sit on it!
Right we live in a smallish condo 1100 square feet for two adults and two small kids. We only have one living area, dining area, and bathroom. I often wonder what people with huge homes and multiple living spaces actually do with them. Seems like a waste to me. Not that occasionally I long for a room to throw all the kids toys and be able to shut the door:D
I'm sitting in a corner just like yours at this very moment! Same end of the couch and everything. It's definitely my nook. I can see the TV and the view out the living room windows, I'm close to power outlets, and I don't have my back to the front door.
@ladyearl0803, It can seem a waste. My household could do fine with half the square footage. We bought this home while thinking of having kids, which didn't happen. While our home, about 1,350 sq ft, is small for this neighborhood, for two adults it's far bigger than necessary. The kicker is that it's become a compromise with my husband, who dreams of a home twice this size on acres of land. Good thing dreams are free.
In my last apt, which had 15 windows all looking out on landscaped ponds with ducks and herons and fountains and turtles....I spent most of my time in the room with a window on to the parking lot!
My friends called it the Opium Den because of my pink, orange, gold and red color scheme. Inside those silky curtained windows, with the hot colored kilim rug and lots of red Ikea things, I was either on the computer or watching TV on the computer.
My lovely, airy, roomy living room with the fireplace and the plants was mainly for the cats to use to watch the ducks, the herons, the turtles....
Oh...and in this new apartment....the future Opium Den is still full of boxes, so I spend my time on a hard dining chair with my computer on the table and my back to the large window.
I'm on the ground floor, so the feng shui aspect of this is horrific. I feel like I'm in a storefront window with my back to the traffic
Actually, we just moved to a family-sized house and I'm having a ton of fun wandering around! I think part of it is that every room still needs work, so spending time IN that room helps me figure out what to online window-shop for. But it's been great to try out different rooms for feel. I was worried I'd be spending all my time in the tv/playroom, but that's not the case, and I'm relieved!
Thought your sofa was denim at first. Glad it's not. I like it!
We are three people in 600 sf an we still have space that rarely gets used. One side of the living room has a sofa and two arm chairs that are used when we have guests, and sometimes our daughter will play there. Mostly we are on the other side with our computer desks, a large bean bag and daughter's books and toys. I sit in the bean bag knitting or reading or at my desk. Or on the floor. I have to make an effort to sometimes go sit at the arm chairs, which are really comfy 50's chairs.
It really seems to me that big houses often are a complete waste of space and resources (and money).
A few years ago I moved my dining table out of the so-called dining nook, and into the living room, in front of the sliding doors, where I can see the sky and river and trees. The table never got used before I did this. Now it is, as my friends say, "where it all happens." I discovered I far prefer to sit at a table than on the couch, and yeah, I have my favourite spot at the table...I try to be a good hostess, but I'm always secretly annoyed to lose "my" chair to a visitor!
Unfortunately, I am still trying to figure out what to do with the little used dining nook. Not much view in there.
@DodieGoldney, Interesting arrangement, from unused dining nook to...Office? Gym? Home theater? Pantry? Crafting area? Art studio? Container garden? Kitchen extension? Could be fun!
Could you tell me what color paint you have on the walls? I love it!
It's all about light. For me, the most important part of any living space is not size but the amount of natural light. I find myself moving through my house as the sun moves, so I can always be in a patch of sunlight.
hi, y'all!
thanks for the great feedback!
@carlin77: the paint color is Glidden Silver Birch. we tried many many grays before we found one that was very subtle but still made the white pop---and wasn't too blue! gray is hard to do, but it's all about testing a portion on your wall first!
@mattster & esvoytko: i actually bought these shelves off of a friend who was downsizing (there's another one in my studio) so i'm not sure where they're from. i have an inquiry in with my friend...i'll let you know if/when i find out!
alas, my friend just replied, and she actually dismembered an entertainment center that she got from Ashley furniture when she was in college, and reassembled it into two stand-alone shelves.
the perils of having creative friends--sometimes they made that awesome thing you wanted to buy, too!
Nice corner, but what I can't quite work out is why spend $1500 on a MBP and only $50 on a second hand sofa? Am I missing something?
I have a wonderful corner in the living room, one side is the end of a couch looking onto the garde, and the other is a small chair with an outlet, looking towards another part of the garden - both with windows. I find that I have a hard time concentrating without unobstructed windows. I get antsy!
