A friend is agonizing over which room to use as the baby's room. The room she prefers has big windows and great light, and a good-sized closet. The other room is small and dark. So what's the problem you ask? The better room also has a fireplace and she's not sure whether it's appropriate for a child's room. For some design inspiration for those of you in the same boat, check out these five childrens' rooms with fireplaces.
Like any other room, a fireplace is a great focal point that you dont' have to shy away from. With children you just need to make sure that a working fireplace is childproofed.

Yep, one of my most favorite things about being in this family's home (http://photoposy.blogspot.com/2010/08/documenting-your-life-portland-oregon.html) was the fire place in little Oliva's room.
I think a fireplace is utterly charming no matter whose room it is in!
One option for having the fireplace in the kids room, if you don't plan on using it is a chalkboard... We had a non-functioning fireplace in our dining room, and we put a piece of plywood behind it (so the fireplace framed it) and painted it with black chalkboard paint for the kids to draw on. We actually rec'd a lot of compliments on it.
A felt camp fire would also look really charming inside a nursery fireplace. I made one from a pattern on etsy and it came out so pretty.
We've got a nonworking fireplace in the playroom. We've been looking for some log pillows to put in it. A felt camp fire sounds great! Honeyhaze do you remember the Etsy seller?
Depending on how deep the fireplace is, kids love nooks & crannies. Use it for a doll house or put slats of wood across on bricks for shelves. Put up a tension rod & pretty curtain to match the real window and hide stuff in baskets. So much you can do. Check out charmgirl.
no doubt about it, there is no replacement for great architectural detail. over and over i look at design pix and over and over, more than i respond to the furnishings, art and decor, i respond to the architecture.
Door16 had a funny quote about a room looking so good you could put a giant stuffed Marmaduke from the state fair and the room would still look great. it's all about the bones, baby.

My sister and I grew up with fireplaces in each of our room. My mom painted the back brick part (as it wasn't in use) and my Nana painted a giant art board to sit in front of it for each of us. We also put our large basket of dolls and stuffed animals in there. All our friends were jealous of this unusual room feature!
a big yes to the fireplace in kid's rooms! we just moved to a 1920's era big house and there are 2 non-working fire places, and one of them is in my daughter's room. It has been walled in and painted white, so it really suits a cute little girls room. Plus there's a gorgeous mantelpiece above it too!
