In many older apartments, fireplaces remain attached to walls long past the time when their original heat-making functions are deactivated. If this situation sounds familiar, fear not! A fireplace can easily gain new purpose as a beautiful focal point.
The inverted space at floor level can be used to store objects, or a faux fireplace can be created using candles. You can even wallpaper or use fake logs to comment on the non-functionality of the structure. Mantles can hold decorative accessories, or be a perfect foil to a hanging TV above. Whatever offbeat ideas you may have for your own unused fireplaces, don't be afraid to create your own heat in the bedroom.

I'd like to know the name of the blue paint in the 1st photo
"If this situation sounds familiar, fear not" -ugh! "Situation"? An old detail such as a fireplace is a BONUS.
I'm with @ vincent b. fireplaces are a major bonus to me in an apartment! My current apartment has the original fireplaces/mantle in both the living room and bedroom and its by far my favorite aspect of my apartment. You can't find structural details like this in todays apartments and I consider myself lucky to have such old and gorgeous things in my home.
