This morning I wanted a first look at the new goods from Missoni at Target. It's been talked about for weeks months now and we've all been patiently waiting. The unfortunate side to that much hype is that if you're not one of the first 3 people in the door, you might be sadly out of luck. I was at my local Super Target 20 minutes after they opened and this is what was left. More photos are right this way...
Now you'd think that only being 20 minutes late I wouldn't have missed out on all the good stuff. Little did I know that many items would only be shipping to stores in small quantities (like less than 5 pieces each), and the first shoppers in the door planned on buying everything they could (and my guess is reselling it on eBay later).
I had first attempted to avoid the store this morning completely, but there were so many eager buyers on Target's website that it was actually slammed with traffic and was shut down for quite some time. The endcaps where product should have been in the store were empty and all around, Missoni felt like a bust. The stationary was sold out, candles were sold out, all bath accessories besides a few shower curtains were sold out, personal accessories, menswear.... sold, sold, sold.

Because they launched the product on a Tuesday, there's a chance more product will roll back into stores before the weekend, but if you want to get your hands on some, I highly suggest being there when the doors open or having a friend go for you.
Just to make sure that there wasn't a crazed group of shoppers at just this one store, we hit 3 additional Targets on the way home (at which point it all started to blend together). All were just as empty, if not more so and all anyone could tell us was, "We didn't expect things to sell through so fast." Really? You didn't because I'm pretty sure the magic ball called the internet could have told you that.
My favorite pieces were the heavy glassware over with the dishes. They were substantial, not plastic like most of the rest of their serving pieces and were in the same vibe as the rest of the line throughout the store without having literal stripes and that fun chevron flavor. Did you brave the stores this morning? How was your experience? Let us know below!

Shaw's Original Fir...
Apparently I'm the only one NOT on the "Missoni for Target is the best thing ever!" train. I really don't like the products at all. The patterns are overdone and uninteresting to me.
Thanks goodness i am not a fan of these busy patterns...haha.
i love missoni...that being said- i want to see their patterns on clothing, or perhaps a beautiful throw- or even on upholstery.....
not on a candle holder.
The glassware and picture frames aren't too bad. The patterns are nice in small (very small!) doses. But those commercials, showing EVERYTHING done up in the design, makes me dizzy :P
Oy... unless Target is really careful about severely limiting availability of all these items over the long-haul, over-saturation of these neurotic patterns is going to really burn people out--ultimately making these a really tacky "main-stream trend".
I got to my local Target (Jersey City) at 745 am and there were already 30 people in line, 99% of them from Manhattan. As I stood in line watching people getting out of their car services I thought to myself, is this really worth it? It was entertaining to listen to the line banter.."I've never been here before, where are we again? " As soon as the door opened a bunch of people BOLTED down the aisles and grabbed whatever they could from the endcaps. All I really wanted was a throw and I never even caught a glimpse, and as soon as I saw the pandemonium ensue I knew it wasn't worth it.
I splurged on the clothing early this morning online but passed on the home stuff. It is too busy for my home style (but find no problem wearing these patterns ha ha), although I would have loved to find dish towels and a kitchen rug to brighten up my kitchen. Some melanine plates I looked at were really cute but I did not feel like buying a set of 8 and I moved on.
I work in downtown Minneapolis, home of the flagship store, just a block away from HQ. When I got to there at 7:20 - twenty minutes after opening - it was nearly decimated. I found a solo tray in home goods and a single pair of mittens left while rushing past me were people with carts FULL of stuff. I had some luck on the website though. Once Target announced on FB that their website was up and running again (for like, two minutes) I grabbed my favorite sweater vest online. WHEW! The clerks said it was worse than Black Friday and I was lucky to escape without cuts and scrapes. He wasn't kidding! :-)
Chaucea - The Target employees told me today that they were only carrying it for 4 weeks. So no one will burn out, especially if they never carry enough stock!
I thought their throws were beautiful and unfortunately sold out online.
I was lucky -- my store still had a number of good items left (and) I was able to sneak in and make a quick purchase online during lunch. I picked up some pillows, some lovely votive holders (they are glass & really substantial - only $5.99 each), handbag & clutch, a bunch of stationary items (my store had lots) a scarf and a makeup train case. My store said they are under the impression they are supposed to get a new shipment tonight - and have new stock tomorrow morning (by 7am opening). BUT - I don't know what items. I was hoping for the throws or luggage and have read those will not be restocked. Bummer. Oh well --- I'm more than pleased with what I was able to purchase. Once I can - I'm going to post my own blog item about my "adventure". Please stop by www.lifestylefiles.blogspot.com

I dunno... I don't like how Missoni is cheapening the brand by doing this.
I happen to like Missoni, and am currently planning on buying a couple of their bath mats and some towels. Not impressed with the target products from the pictures though.
Really, really hope that the ebay resellers get burned -- that none of their things sell.
yeah, just got back from my local Target store, and there was literally nothing left! I found a baby outfit stashed in the kitchen department, and thats it! CRAZY! and the website keeps going down too...
I got to my local store at 8:30 and the place was a mess. Ladies be crazy! They were grabbing stuff out of boxes as the employees were unloading them. I was embarassed by all the snarkiness. "That's my stuff don't touch!" I got a scarf, some tights and a set of platters and am more than happy. Glad I went, was an interesting social experiment.
I managed to get an order in online this morning (mostly clothes). I stopped by a store at lunch in hopes of throw pillows - there was almost nothing left! The shoes and picture frames were abundant, but pretty much everything else was gone. And this in Arkansas...
I didn't hold out hopes that I'd find anything in the stores, based on my experience trying to find Orla Kiely for Target canisters a couple years back. I guess now I can just save myself a trip...
I live near a Target that isn't the target audience for Missoni, so what little stock it received was still there when I went by at lunchtime. I just don't get it -- I was completely underwhelmed. The clothes seemed like they'd only look good on a skinny, curveless woman and the home items looked cheap. The tote bag was cute, but I couldn't justify it because I knew I'd never use it. I also liked the bike but wasn't going to pay $400 for it.
I got to the store about 15 minutes after it opened. The merch was basically all gone, but I did manage to pick up three things I liked. I was appalled by the behavior of the "Missoni hoarders" - people walking around with their carts overflowing, buying for 3-4 people. I made sure to say please and thank you repeatedly to the Target staff who were clearly over being abused. One shopper snatched plates out of my hand as I was putting them in my cart, just after he literally wrestled with a woman twice his age over a comforter. I feel somewhat sorry for these people as their homes will look like Missoni threw up on every available space. What's the benefit of brand lust if you don't use it tastefully?
The lovely stemware the writer wrote of was still available online this afternoon. Unfortunately, the martini shaker with the subtle chevron was sold out. Although the site crashed multiple times today, I was still able to acquire additional items I wanted. In hindsight, I should have stayed in bed and shopped from home.
Anyone know how much the picture frames were/are selling for?
With all the build up and marketing Target did, this shouldn't have been shocking. I'm not into Missoni, but I have loved from the past brandings they have done. I bought the Orla Kiely canisters on clearance all three for the original price of the large one. I figure if I need it, then it will be there and if it isn't, I didn't need it any way.
still wish they would bring some new Liberty print things back!! THAT I LOVED!!!! .....or how about Cath Kidston!!
I went over lunch. I thought I wanted the rainboots, and they still had plenty, but then seeing them in person I changed my mind. I thought that I would want a few things but I got sick of the all the ultrabusy patterns once I saw them up close. The throw still looks pretty to me, though.
I kind of like the black and white shower curtain but not enough to deal with the rush.
It was HORRIBLE. We were at a Target in Los Angeles at 7:10 and about forty people back in line. When the store opened at 8 a.m. hundreds of people who had waited in line rushed the front door, pushing and shoving and behaving horribly. My friend was literally pushed down as someone snatched an item out of her hands. Despite being there so early and in the front of the line we each left with only one item. We tried the website multiple times and it kept crashing. I have to say I was the most disappointed with the way the Target staff handled the situation - there was no sense of order (on a Black Friday I have never seen the shoving and rioting that ensued) and the rudeness of fellow shoppers who seemed to be caught up in a mob mentality. My mother, however, was able to get to a Target in PA at about 1:30 and pick up items for us without any such nonsense.
I wasn't interested in any of this stuff but, as a former retailer, being sold out within minutes is pretty interesting. I just went to check out what was online. The Target site is down. Amazing. I wonder if they were counting on this and plan to have some or all Missoni items back on the shelves for the holiday season.
It clashes with my home decor. It is a pass for me. ;)
Hoo boy... this is what everyone's been all excited for? Yuck.
I picked up the giant serving bowl in pic 7, and I love it already. It's quite heavy and substantial. Didn't care at all for any of the clothing, and I mainly went in search of the weekender-type luggage tote. Was successful in that search, but I did get the last one!
I wanted that serving bowl and the throw, but oh well.
After reading (with morbid fascination) these many posts, all one can conclude is that Target is going down the drain and bringing Missoni with it. Target, from an investor's standpoint, has been flailing for some time.
Although you may get the Missoni spirit, you certainly don't get the Missoni quality. Which is why I couldn't care less about these Target collaborations. I've learned long ago that it's a futile endeavor.
My mom owned a Missoni dress from the 70s. I never liked it. I don't understand the crazed rampage through the store, but a lot of the items are on Ebay at RIDICULOUS prices.
Msfavaloro - I'd be more disappointed in your fellow shoppers. Target hasn't had riots at their other designer openings and I don't see why they'd expect them now. Yeah, there was buzz on the internet, but from my viewpoint, it wasn't any more than any of the others.
I got a sweater online right after the site went back up, I guess. That's all I wanted. If it doesn't fit, to eBay it will go, but the people buying stuff in bulk to resell are jerks.
Fascinating. I wonder if they'll institute some kind of limit per customer in the future? Looks like their launch was essentially wholesaling for eBay merchants.
I agree Lisa, crazy pandemonium grabbing everything you see sounds more like ebay sellers hoping to capitalize on the hype.
I haven't really cared for any of the Target clothing designer collections except for Loomstate. The fit and quality have been poor which is much more important to me than the designer name. I did enjoy the home items from designers who are all about their prints, I love my Liberty of London black & white bedspread and also liked the Orla Kiely items.
would have waited up till midnight to browse the collection online, but i fell asleep early and woke up at 6am. at that point, the missoni debut slipped my mind, so i was just reading blogs when i saw a post. IF i had remembered it was today, i could have gotten it together and been at the brooklyn store opening (down my street). i was able to see everything online btw 7 -8am. the colored chevron travel bags were sold out. - actually target.com should allow the use of sold out instead of out of stock. it's hard to tell at the beginning of a launch whether the item has sold out or whether they haven't yet made the stock available for ordering. also, what is so hard about making the product viewable online ahead of time? why can't people at least look at all of the items and add them to their wish lists? the site might not crash on debut day, if people didn't need to spend so much time just browsing to see what's available. it's computer programming, not rocket science.
anyway, i saw a purple chevron pouf that is pretty cool. went back online to pull a picture of it mid-morning and saw the site crash drama. i got back on after 1pm and pulled the jpeg.
was planning to swing by after work. guess there won't be much to see.
the ebay resellers disgust me. there isn't anything target can do about that. they are in the business of selling things, so limiting quantities per customer is silly. but at least people who want this should find the strength to boycott until ebay sellers bring the prices down. going in and buying all the inventory on something designed for people with modest income so you can sell it at a gross markup... that's immoral. hardcore capitalism and immoral. why sell items of lesser quality than the brand at prices too high for people who would take the low-end line? the people who would pay $2500 for a bike want high-end missoni.
when this happened with calypso home, i was pretty sickened. you think i'll pay you $40 for a $17 scarf that would have been on the rack if you hadn't run in and scooped all of them up? i'd rather pay full price at the calypso store for higher quality.
I don't see the appeal at all. I love chevrons, but the irregularity -- and all the blinding colors? It was easy for me to stay far away.
I worked for Target in Merchandising up until about 2 months ago, and I had the good fortune of being able to see the Missoni product as it was in development in both sporting goods (luggage) and cards/party (stationery).
I don't care for the prints really, but the hype was insane. And the buy plans were horrid. For luggage, for example, each STORE was only slated to get 1 - 2 of the largest pieces, and that was only about 50% of stores. The other, less demanding stores wouldn't get any, though they may have received some of the stationery items instead. The buyers/analysts knew what they were doing when they ordered it, and they purposefully ordered small.
Stationery was just as bad, though each store I believe was set up to receive an initial order of all SKUs. The best part was that initial samples from the vendor were super late, and they ended up being awful - the print was extremely small, skewed in very strange ways. Definitely glad to see they turned out better during final production.
The nice thing is that all of the pieces I saw seemed to be of a good quality. This is usually the case with Target's designer lines, but with these it was very apparent. Especially in luggage, which historically has pretty bad ratings/return rates for stores.
Judging from the posts and tweets on the opening today, I'm glad I live in an area that possibly isn't the top demographic for Missoni wares. Sounds like if I were back home in LA, I would've only left with bruises which is too bad! There were only a few people waiting when the doors opened, and I was able to score a few items (with Missoni less is more I think). The serving bowl is actually pretty good quality and is beautiful. On the down side, my store didn't carry the throw, vases or bath towels, but it's just as well, buying those few items and a few clothing items (girls XL cape and cardigan, slightly cheaper) it still set me back quite a bit.
I decided to get up about 20 minutes early to be at the Brooklyn Target when it opened at 8 am -- it's on my way to work anyway. There was already a line-up, but that broke down as soon as the doors opened. About half the people bolted in, while the other half of us were like, "yeah, think I'll walk like a normal human being."
I put a couple scarves in my bag until I could look in a mirror to see which one I liked best, same with two of the blouses. I didn't need two of each and couldn't justify spending that much. The scarf will be a fun punch of color to the fall wardrobe though. The shoes didn't go quite as fast -- I tried on the flats and the heels and opted for the heels. All the bags and cosmetic holders were gone.
The housewares didn't go quite as fast as the clothing which was snatched up right away. I got one picture frame which I thought would be eye-catching on a bookshelf. But as some commenters have noted, I don't want my place to look like Missoni threw up in it. The bedding seemed the least picked over.
Quality definitely varied -- the sweaters seemed nice and soft. The t-shirts too. The shoes were probably one step up from what you normally get a Target. The frames were about what you normally get there in price and quality. The glass pieces were really nice and substantial.
We seemed to buck the mean New Yorker stereotype though, especially compared to these accounts from other places. People rushed in and grabbed stuff up, but were trading later once they tried stuff on and figured out what they wanted. There were definitely people with carts full of stuff, but they seemed to have more big-ticket items or sets of dishwear, that type of thing. Some people were rushing the employees when they brought boxes out, but the employees were like, knock yourselves out. They mostly just seemed amused. Overall, except for a few, most people were being friendly and polite.
Loving the comments here..makes me feel better about my morning (see earlier post) but still annoyed I got up so early. I have to add that the ebaying disgusts me, and I am an ebay seller myself-Lady J summed it up perfectly. It's just not right, and although I would like a throw I will not be buying one on ebay.
The funniest thing I heard what when one of the "ladies" from the city asked a Target employee to get her a cart, to which she politely responded "Carts are up front."
Already TONS of stuff being sold on eBay.....I actually forgot completely about this launch and had plans to go to Target for other things after work. It will be interesting to see how much is left at my local store.
I took the very same picture this afternoon! There was nothing left......... y'all please don't buy this junk off ebay from the crazies.
Seriously? I just don't get it... It reminds me of a realization I had the other day - the best way to ensure you are never out of fashion is to make sure you never buy something that is in fashion.
I went to ebay just out of curiosity and there were sweaters selling for over $100...Does Target even sell any clothing for $100? This is ridiculous.
I'm off to the sketchy Target down the street from my office...surely the dangerous store that you shouldn't go to at night will still have stuff in stock?
All of it is FUG, nothing like the usual Missoni. It's really too bad, I had been looking forward to the collection and wanted to like it.
I bought a couple of things online this morning, during a brief window of time when the site was actually working. Then I went to my local store during lunch to see what they had- there was still quite a bit left, especially the melamine dishware (that stuff always seems to stay put until clearance time, regardless of design) and scarves/hats (our climate is mild). Some of it was nice, some not so much. I'll agree with the others... none of it is worth paying exorbitant prices on ebay.
the website is down again. oh wow.
I went to the store and it was all gone by 9:30, just a few people straggling about with items founds tossed in aisles. The stuff people had looked way better in person than it did on the internet so when I got home I bought more stuff. SOme of the clothes are really cool. I wish Target would have a limit on how many items a person can purchase because they are obviously going to sell it on ebay. LAME!!!!!!!
Wow, just hearing how crazy EVERYONE is about this stuff makes me want it even less. This sounds way too much like Black Friday behavior and I am not the type to wait out front for a store to open and stampede in with the herd.
I went this morning, five minutes after my Target opened. They were completely sold out of women's and housewares. I ended up buying a child's XL cardigan that fit me. I have always loved Missoni's chevron stripes, though I have never had the budget for them. But the Missoni hoarders are lame, for sure. There was a woman buying for eight other people and she bought every size of every item because she didn't know what would fit them. Ugh.
Whoa, those patterns are just way too crazy.
Poor planning by Target. 8000 ebay listings already and you lose customers; also lose when the things that don't sell come back. Also most of these things are actually on back order. Still missed sales and returns when buyers of ebay inventory take their items back.
Then there are always those who have to have the item an hour ago;perhaps some buyers who don't even care for the design when they see it in person. Fascinating.
I wanted some melanine dishes for picnics, and have boon on the hunt for at least a year and a half. I thought the Missoni ones would be lovely to own, but it wasn't worth the hassle. I did go in late this afternoon to buy a pair of socks I saw online, and they were still in stock. Someone had returned a lovely, heavy votive holder too... I think a candleholder and some socks are just the right amount of Missoni, so everything worked out perfectly :)
I wouldn't shop in some of the circumstances described above unless it were the last way left to get food or water. It's accessories, not the last chopper out of Saigon.
I went to the Target a mile away around 1 and there was a bed set left and a little bit of clothes. I found some of the pillows on their website (out of stock online, not sold in stores) and i'm going to try to nap those sometime. I used to work at 4am at Target and used to be able to buy the good stuff on my lunch at 8am. It's how I bought a Wii when they were really hard to find.
Seriously though, I don't care about the name, I just love the zigzag designs and color palette.
I was at the Columbia Heights, D.C., store this afternoon and saw no indication that they were carrying it at all.
(But that store, IMO, always comes across as one that is about to close down, rather than one that was the talk of the town when it opened.)
Also, was it this crazy when Target did Orla Kiely? That stuff (from Target) is really tough to find now, even on Ebay.
It looks cheap / made in china to me. Who wants massed produced stuff anyway?? so sick of this.
err..it is made in china I meant...
I went to a Bay Area suburbs Target this morning and the scene was similar...sold out in 15 minutes.
I disagree with the general consensus that everyone buying in mass quantities was an ebay seller. I bought only 4 items this morning, but chatted in line with the women in front of me and behind me in the checkout. Both had stuffed shopping carts and both were buying only for themselves.
I also disagree that all the items were tacky and poor quality. There were many women's items without the telltale zigzag, including a simple black v-neck sweater, pink turtleneck, gold twinset. As for the quality, it varied pretty widely, but if you steer clear of the plastic tablewear, I think there's some good stuff.
Hopefully the website will come back up for those who missed out.
tacky, massed produced midwestern garbage.
I actually got up at 5:30 to place an order online, then took a shower and was at Target by 7:15. I stood in line, went in at 8 and went straight to housewares. Got everything I wanted and watched as people literally bought every single piece of home from the shelves. The employees gave up trying to put in on shelves and left it on the carts it came out on. Sad that people that wanted a piece for themselves couldn't get it because of ebayers. I bought several things, but I can promise you, after waiting on this launch since Spring (and taking a vacation day to shop for it) none of mine will end up on ebay
Yeah, I was less than impressed with this line.
The only thing I was interested in was the throw, and they were sold out by the time I was able to get onto the website. When I stopped at the store on my way home from work, there was no Missoni merchandise to be found anywhere! My local Target even started stocking other merchandise where the Missoni products would be...makes me wonder if more will be coming in.
Anyone who buys Missoni on eBay is just nuts.
Example online at Target for $39.99 (and still in stock) - Missoni for Target® Throw - Colore
https://www.target.com/p/Missoni-for-Target-174-Throw-Colore/-/A-13444115
Now the exact same item on eBay is $187+ after less than 12 hours
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Missoni-Target-Throw-Colore-SOLD-OUT-HAND-SHIP-TODAY-/290609591971?pt=US_Throws&hash=item43a9ae76a3
I made it to my local store on lunch (around 1:00 ) and the shelves were pretty bare. However, a second pass through the bedding section and there were several throws back on the shelf. I snagged one, a pair of shoes, a laptop sleeve and some other items and am pleasantly surprised. The throw is really soft and snuggly and also a really good weight and it doesn't feel like it will fall apart easily. I am hoping they re-stock some of the pillows over the next few days, but don't have the time to camp out at my local store either. I was actually kind of disappointed in the women's clothing selection though.
9,600 ebay listings and counting...pretty pathetic that Target let people pile their carts up to the top only to resell at crazy prices..thanks for not letting everyone else enjoy!
When I went into one of my local stores...everything was gone, baby, gone! I figured a couple of crazy people went in and bought everything up, only so they could turn around and sell it on ebay. Sounds like I was correct!
I was at Target this morning to buy bubble bath for my kid--and to gawk at the rabid Missoni fans. I got there about an hour and a half after opening, and it was pretty bare. A few women's clothing items in XL and XXL, some shoes, PJs, and accessories. The housewares were gone. There were two women who had obviously grabbed everything they could get their hands on and were sorting their COMPLETELY full carts and deciding what to keep. Really?!
I reached my store 20 minutes after its opening, figuring that that the mass coveted items would be clothing rather than the couple of home items I had my eye on. Wrong. The store was completely bereft of home items. Staff I spoke with said people were lined up around the block early in the a.m. As for clothing, there was a single XL cardigan sadly swinging on the rack by itself. I did manage to get on the website and nab a throw (though not the one I wanted), a set of towels, and a pair of online-only arm warmers.
The prices on ebay are ridiculous. Target should have put limits on the number of items purchased. Instead they are acting like a middleman for these ebay peddlers. Disgusting. I will not buy these things on ebay. For the prices they want you could buy ACTUAL Missoni.
Geeeeez, glad I don't like Missoni!!
I love Missoni too. For someone else. My minimalist style is not conducive to the pattern upon pattern motif. So alas, no trips to Target for moi.
I think all these high-end brands "for Target" ruins their reputation as "high end". The reason Missoni was so good was because it was unaffordable, thus not everyone had it. And now, everyone has the cheap version of it? Not interested.
I don't like melamine.
I don't get the hype with Missoni. Just looks like a bunch of chevron to me.
Who's still boycotting Target? Can I get a what, what?
I would never wear a generic Missoni because it's so obvious. I would throw a rug down, however they were all gone (I wasn't surprised) But I did pick up some stockings that didn't scream generic Missoni:) Being from MPLS, I have always been a Target shopper, but was disappointed to hear that they support Michelle Bachmann... I shop there a lot less... Boo to corporate America!!! Shop on Etsy!
I arrived at my local Target in Los Angeles at 10am still hopeful I'd score a few housewares and possibly a cardigan for myself. Little did I know, the store was picked clean by the 7am folks who lined up. I did see one of the coveted Black and white suitcases in someone's cart and overheard several people trying to buy it from the lucky lady before she even checked out. I was fortunate enough to get some lovely pieces for my 15 month old daughter. Maybe one day she'll pass them down to her daughter. http://lovesrobots.blogspot.com/
I was excited to see the line when they showed pictures online, but everything in person was just not impressive and highly overpriced for low quality. as a MN girl I love me some target (except I didn't know about the michelle bachmann thing, UGH) but this was just ridiculous. I got there at around 11 because I had to pick up prescriptions anyways and all of the clothes and most of the housewares were picked over. I saw a bunch of ladies frantically running around with their carts FULL of missoni. One girl was whining because they didn't have luggage left.
What's funny is later in the day I went to get some tops from Forever21 and they have a TON of missoni inspired stuff that is more quality and looks more like the actual missoni than the target collection, for twice as less. That says a lot because forever21 is usually not known for their quality.
I did pick up a laptop case because it had a pretty salmon colored lining and gold hardware. The outside wasn't chevron either so I nabbed it!
I wonder how many girls will be rocking the Missoni on the train tomorrow? I bet I see a few!
(I got the bedding, a pillow for my sofa, and a sweater, and I love all three.)
i'm boycotting the ebay sellers. it's easy to do since i don't want anything that bad, but i'm calling for a boycott on my blog. this has turned into a second industry, almost like a black market. looking back at all the good designer collabs of the past few years (not just at target), this business of using ebay to screw everyone else over has got to stop.
the only people who have the incentive and the true means are we, the people. stop paying these jokers' credit card bills by putting yourself into debt. force their prices down!
I live in RI so I figured I would see if they had anything left around 5pm. They had some frames, vases, a few things left. I was hoping for a throw or ballet flats and naturally they were long gone. I did get my two year old daughter a really cute jacket, they had plenty of kid stuff. They still have a few things online, too, if you are patient. I was pretty tempted by the iPad cases, online only.
Thank god I didn't end up going to Target today to pick up detergent! I <3 Target but I REALLY do not understand the hype at all...why would you want to decorate your home with something that your 10 friends just bought? Especially in such a loud and obvious way.
This makes my REAL (albeit hand-me-down) Missoni (for MISSONI) skirt feel all the less special. Because there was no over-saturation prior to this Target nonsense, people hadn't seen the unusual, bright pattern & would ask about the skirt. I wonder if even a consignment shop would take it now? What's next Ferragamo for K-mart?
I just finally got to look at this stuff online and I think it is FUGLY.
Guess some people still feel like design has to be inaccessible to others to be valued. There's always diamonds and gold. I wouldn't worry about the market being over saturated if they could sell out in one day, if anything it will help spread a greater appreciation for missoni's design to a broader market -if it weren't for Lanvin for H&M I would never have known about it. I can imagine that for a few young designers getting their first piece of lanvin or missoni and starting a life long love affari, and if anything they're only more likely to appreciate the "real" thing when they see it.
Have people gone mad? Stand in line half a night to buy more stuff they really don't need?
I understand nothing.
It is easy to understand.
The goods will sell for the double price on ebay. These people will earn quite a lot, so naturally it makes sense to buy everything you can get your hands on.
(I don't approve of it, but I understand why people buy it all - it is not to be used in their homes, but to make a profit.)
I went after work today, hadn't yet heard about the hype so at 6 pm I was pretty shocked to see every single thing gone. The price tags were still on the shelves, but the products were replaced with normal target brand items. I was mainly interested in picking up one of the throws, but more so just kinda wanted to see the collection.
What really blows my mind is the people on ebay selling it for such high prices. I searched "missoni for target" earlier and over 22,000 items came up. Pretty gross.
*shakes head amusedly at Chaucea et al*
oh, to see the world as they do....
I find this whole thing hilarious, because the stuff is so ugly! Way to buy into the hype.
@Dempsen:
"Guess some people still feel like design has to be inaccessible to others to be valued. "
No, good design has to have a certain integrity. It must be well-made and well-conceived. Cheaply constructed items made in a Chinese sweatshop with just loud identifiable graphics don't qualify as "good design".
As for H&M, I'm not a huge fan there either, even though my kids' closets are full of their clothes. Their products are very poorly made -- can't tell you how many times snaps have fallen off, seams have come undone and knees have ripped, long before my kids have grown out of them. H&M clothes are disposable -- they almost never make it into the hand-me-down bag.
And I sure as heck don't need H&M to teach me about Lanvin!
The best quote I saw about this, via Twitter, yesterday was "Should have called it Missoni For Target For EBay".
I can see the line's appeal but it's definitely not my style.
@ The Rhinestone Contessa, now Cath Kidston I would line up for!!!! I also liked the Orla Keily stuff.
I went after work yesterday and the clothes were completely gone, but they still had a few of the home items pictured above, plus shoes, travel pillows, bedding, a couple cups, and way overpriced tights and socks. I've never been a big fan of Missoni and I wasn't impressed enough to buy anything I saw. The only stuff I did like was the black and white. I honestly wasn't expecting the hype because they've had some big designer names in the store before that didn't cause these crazes.
I too hope the ebay buyers get burned, that's so crappy of them. Why pay crazy high prices for Target quality just because of the brand name?
@ lovemegan-" think all these high-end brands "for Target" ruins their reputation as "high end". The reason Missoni was so good was because it was unaffordable, thus not everyone had it. And now, everyone has the cheap version of it? Not interested."
--Really? So it's not the design or quality that makes it great to you, it's being too expensive for most people? To me design is about beauty and art, not about snobbishness.
Yuck. Ugly. Cheap. Why?
^^^ um AT, can we have a like feature please??
what also annoys me is the lack of journalistic integrity in the coverage. racked has a story up about how the line is sold out online. not so, there are plenty of items still available. how do you run such a story without taking the time to actually look at the website?
you'd think target would be countering that story with word that there are plenty of items still available.
Seriously migraine-inducing. I'll pass.
Check this ebay auction out the bid is up to $125 for a set of 4 mugs. Now I brought 2 of these mugs it was only 2 left yesterday and only paid $4.99 for each one. This is ridiculous.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Missoni-Target-Mugs-SET-4-/230672331680?_trksid=p3286.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D2777241551110980331
without the high quality missoni is known for, all one is left with is any old chevron pattern....I'll pass. That's the problem with most of these target collaborations -- the quality still screams Target
I don't get it. All the stuff pictured just looks like the normal stuff they have at Target, but with a designer name attached. It's as if I took a piece of masking tape, labeled it "Jordache" (or whatever's popular now), and slapped it on my butt, and then everybody started freaking out over how great my pants were.
I knew the Missoni collection was launching this week, but wasn't sure exactly what day. I learned quickly when I tried to log onto the site yesterday, and knew that was exactly why the site wasn't working.
I just wanted to see how much the throws were going for.
But doing a quick search of ebay and I see EXACTLY where all the sold-out pieces went.
Target (and other retailers) really should put limits on the amounts that a customer can purchase. It's undercutting the store and the consumers.
"Jordache" (or whatever's popular now)
it is 2011, cremedela. 2011.
I've been feeling like the only one who just doesn't like Missoni, but I see there are a couple more like me who agree. I'm just not a big fan of their colors, or the crazy amounts of pattern. Maybe some of the black and white stuff, but that's it.
In general I don't like the designer brands that Target has done, just because the quality is not enough of a step up to justify the expense (even if it's kind of cute). I've picked up some of the "designer" clothes in the past once they hit clearance racks, but that's it.
After reading these horror stories, Im kinda glad I live in the country where Missoni isnt so big. I was there right at 8 as they opened the doors and there were only a few people who came in after me. None looked at the Missoni stuff. I was able to pick up what I wanted, but I went back later that night with a friend and everything was wiped out! Crazy.
The ebay/craigslist thing is irritating. Unfortunately, it looks like people are bidding.
With the exception of Luella Bartley's line for Target (the first of the Go International partnerships several years ago), the quality of the clothing in the limited edition lines has been very poor. I hope that's not true with the Missoni stuff too. I love Missoni, but I'd rather save up until I could afford the real thing.
As an odd side note, I happened to walk past one of DC's Filene's Basement stores this afternoon and they had a decal on the window indicating they had Missoni. I didn't go in but I wonder if it was an odd coincidence or whether they are capitalizing on the name being so prominent right now.
@Lady J, I know. I stopped thinking about designer jeans in the '80s.
Sarah Rae - you missed NOTHING, other than being out for gas money. This stuff is lik Bruce Lee's sister (Ug) ;D
(Possibly the 1880s.)
it shows...
Gee, Lady J, you're so cranky! But I do agree to boycott such scalped merchandise. Their sellers should have the profits of such incivility cut to nil.
I went to Target today and it's all still very well stocked where I am. Seeing the way people are going crazy for it on ebay makes me want to go buy some of the crap and start reselling.
Loved strolling into my target in the STICKS where people go nuts for Ethan Allen and finding every single product. Once again glad to live in a rural area of New England.
My Target (NH) was fully stocked and lacked any sort of crowd at 10 a.m. launch day. I went to specifically buy a one piece baby outfit (now sold out online) but when I got there I didn't like the looks of it. It had glittery thread throughout and I felt that was somewhat cheap and tacky. The rest of the stuff didn't do anything for me. I left empty-handed.
cranky has nothing to do with it. that is a mood. i am feeling a certain way in response to the situation. that way is a combination of shock, exasperation, realization, and disgust.
ebay opportunism has changed the very nature of these short-run promos. it is no longer a phenomenon, but an established aspect of the process - which alters the process entirely, shifting it away from it's secondary intent (design for all). it's primary intent being to turn a profit for the store.
what i realize is that the time to fight back is now. more than anything else, this launch has shown us that the line needs to be drawn. the resellers' greed cannot be harnessed; their money is spent. but the buyers' greed can be harnessed and used to turn things back around. collectively. the obstacle is that buyers have bought into a competitive spirit.
concede the battle was lost at retail and the war *can* be won on ebay via boycott. teach people to stop doing this.
(and if you meant that jordache thing, that's a joke. she got it.)
The people who bought all the Missoni C@#* and then put it on eBay to make a profit suck! I wouldn't boycott Target because of it, but I would never buy it from eBay(which I think is totally suspect anyway), crazy that people are actually bidding on it. Proves that there are a lot of suckers out there!!!
Somehow I was completely unaware of this product line and Target's big promotion. It sounds like I didn't miss anything.
I wil keep going to my local designer discount stores and buy real Missoni accessories, mostly scarves, that I can afford. BTW, even with the genuine stuff, there's lots that's ugly and some that is poor quality.
That said, I found this whole episode distasteful. I am not a Target shopper but planned to wander over to check out the towels. Now, the whole thing is a turn off. And it would be justice if folks return what doesn't sell on eBay or if folks spend more on eBay than for a real something at a discount store.
Ick!
Yes, I meant just the Jordache thing. I didn't get that it was a joke. On the rest I agree and join the boycott. It reminds me of the illegal price-gouging for ice and batteries after a hurricane.
Lady J, I'm with you.
people, people ... don't believe the hype!
I didn't know crap like that looked good.
Boy we gots some snobbery on here :) I love the target designer collabs, not every piece is amazing, but there's usually at least one that's super special. I love that it's limited, I love that it's hoopla and madness. That's the FUN of it! Silly people :)
I've become snobbish as the joints age about avoiding any crowd that may stampede. Even when spry I never got Black Friday and shopping as a contact sport. Yeah, home shopping! :)
I was really excited about the Missoni line. I LOVE colorful graphic prints. I scoured the look book and had a few must haves: ballet flats, throw, clutch, cardigan, espresso cups, folders, votives. Little did i know, that shopping online at 8 would be futile. I eventually got through online, and most of my items were sold out. I orders a few things, and we will see if I like them. I ended up stopping at several Targets on my way home from work and picked up a few more pieces. We'll see how much I keep.
Not sure why everyone is hating on the collaboration, it is all in goo fun. Ebay hoarders...not so much.
Some of the items look fun, but I refuse to participate in this nonsense. Target should have set a family limit. Unless it's truly a limited line, in a few months it'll be passe.
I was happy to nab 2 cardigans and a scarf. I've wanted a Missoni cardigan for years but being a normal working mom, it's irresponsible for me to splurge that kind of dough on 1 item just for myself. I don't get this attitude of "Missoni is cheapening the brand"...like YOU could afford them! 99.5% of the country cannot and HELLO...RECESSION.
I'm happy that Missoni created a level of product that is accessible to people who appreciate their design aesthetic and can't reasonably justify $500 on a scarf. I think it's smart and respectful of people during difficult times. Good for them, good for Target.
And PS, AT didn't used to be so flooded with Negative Nellies. I've been reading the site for many years now, but each time I check back it seems to get worse and worse.
Negative attitudes are quite unattractive even less fashionable.
Maya Angelou is known for not tolerating guests with negative attitudes. She kicks them out of her home, no warning. I agree. It's time for AT to expect a better attitude on the boards or more and more of us will wander off, never to return.
Zig-zags... ho-hum.
I get the feeling that a lot of people were making purchases not for their own use, but to re-sell online. Just look at ebay - the markups are insane! Just so gross!
Ok I bought some Missoni on Ebay. It was worth it to me to avoid the stampede at the stores. I don't understand why it is so bad to buy it and resell on Ebay. I have done it myself with items from Anthro and Orla Kiely. Also it seems hard to believe none of the posters have ever done this?
Is it really that much different than the person who brags about finding a designer item at a yard sale or a thrift shop?
I was checking out online at 7:30am when the site crashed and I lost my cart. Such a bummer! I actually drove to a store and got there 5 minutes after the store opened and everything was already gone. I did manage to get my daughter a pair of wellies (cute!) and found the ceramic set of serving bowls (MEGA cute). An employee actually came up and asked me what I was looking for- she offered to go in the back and find the blanket I was trying to get for my sister's wedding shower. Of course it had already gone out and was swept away in the sea of voracious 50 year old women that cleaned everything out. You would have never known that I live in one of the most economically depressed areas in the country by the way they were going at it...
As to people blathering on about buying "real" Missoni, I own a "real" scarf and the quality of it is very similar to the ones they were selling for $19.99. Try not to be so full of yourselves- why rag on people for wanting something pretty that they can actually afford?
I bought the tall black and white zigzag vase yesterday at Target for $39.00. I like it! One Missoni thing will do, and I needed another vase anyway.
Frankly surprised there was anything left.
Well you can buy a pair of $31,000 Missoni for Target rain boots on eBay. I'm watching this item just to see what fool will actually pay for them.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220855994760#ht_526wt_1188
Well, a lot of the merchandise has come back into Target as returns. It seems a lot of people just bought everything then got home with it, tried it on or thought it through and then made major returns. That is how I scored a great chevron cardigan in beautiful colors and in my size....I saw it being placed back on the empty shelf several days after the first rampage. I know there has been a lot of hype, but at least one piece can really revitalize your wardrobe. It is hard to find patterns and prints/add color to your basic wardrobe without feeling like you should be stepping on a cruise ship. These pieces are professional and sharp in look and the quality of construction seems to be up to my standards....I'm a project editor at a nonprofit so a $300 Missoni cardigan is not an option for me. But I'm happy to get the same color injection and pep in my step from target for an affordable 39.00. I will buy more Missoni but I think a little goes a long way.
I really love the Missoni stuff! I don't think it's cheapening anything and it's bringing a cool brand to people who can't afford $900 vases. But it is really annoying that, as one poster here said, Target is essentially wholesaling to e-bay resellers. It's sleazy that people would do that and I hope people don't buy it there, especially at the markups I'm seeing. $31,000 for rain boots? What a joke.
Just saw this and it's so true: For what people are charging for Missoni for Target on e-bay you can get REAL Missoni clothes... From CNBC:
Designer Margherita Maccapani Missoni urged shoppers today to avoid the items on eBay.
“You guys! very silly to buy #missonifortarget on ebay for 3 times the price!! For that money go out and get M Missoni and you’ll avoid looking all the same,” she tweeted to her more than 14,000 followers.
http://www.cnbc.com/id/44535313
I have no idea what retailers think they are accomplishing by making so much hype about something and then not having enough of the product to go around. You might make a quick buck but you could also piss off some customers enough that they would never come back. This reminds me of the Cabbage Patch dolls mania in the 80's and all those highly sought after "gotta have mes" that followed in the years afterwards. Mainly at Christmas but now it seems to be any time of year. All I can say is people who fall for this stuff are a bunch of cows being led to the slaughter. By the way, I think Missoni is butt ugly.
LOL at the commenter who liked the bike but wouldnt pay 400, that same bike sold for 3,500 a couple days ago!! and too all the jealous housewives on here mad about people reselling on ebay, I made 300 dollars this week selling this garbage. thanks.
I really like Missoni and own a lovely Missoni vintage scarf I got from a little consignment store for 35$. I could never afford anything else Missoni, but I'm always on a lookout for it. Naturally I was excited about this line, but then I realized I didn't truly need these mass-produced items, and was much happier buying one-of-a-kind handmade and vintage pieces on etsy at my own pace. The glass dish looks beautiful, but I'd rather wait and find a brilliant piece of mid-century glass. I guess I've become a fan of slow decorating; it's like slow food.
I am very encouraged to see that there are literally thousands of these items listed on EBay with no bids at all! If you want anything just wait a month or two and then try EBay - I am guessing that the ridiculous prices will have to come down!
I am selling both my Liberty of London and Missoni bikes on eBay (now)…starting bid is basically what they sold for in the store. Not looking to make a huge profit like most people, just feeling icky after watching how ugly & mean people were getting at the Missoni launch. After having spent the last year gazing lovingly at my Liberty bike (it’s so beautiful), it’s time to say goodbye. I’ll use the money towards a plain bike with no hard feelings :)
