We often mention the importance of a good task chair or desk when it comes to home office ergonomics. But almost as important is a good desk lamp, since we think your eyes are just as important as your backside, back and shoulders. LED desk lighting is where home office lighting is trending toward, but finding an affordable option can be a task since the lighting technology hasn't quite become standard. Here are 5 (fairly) affordable LED desk lamps to light up your life...
Z-Bar High Power LED Desk Lamp: this our favourite amongst the bunch, as it articulates in every which way, thanks to the lamps three joints. The 66 LED lights only uses 8.8 watts with an estimated 40,000 hour light life, offering both warm or daylight settings. Available in red, metallic black and silver for $169.95.
The Libra Desk Lamp: looks like it was designed to complement an Apple setup, doesn't it? The 280 lumen LED lamp creates an 120 degree light spread with a simple on/off switch on the base and controls for 100% to 10% brightness adjustment. $247.25 at TheLEDLight.com.
Humanscale Element LED Task Light this design is one you'll either love or hate, with a very unique light head component which contains a single multi-chip LED and bears a striking resemblance to an Apple Mighty Mouse with heat sinks. 360 swivel base and 60,000 hour lifespan, this is built to last and starts at $395.
Grandrich 1.2W LED Desk Lamp: it's not going to win any design awards, but for $29.99 this KMart special isn't going to break the bank like the lamps above.
Mini-Z LED Desk Lamp: If you like the Z-Bar model up above, but can't sport the $169 and can do with just 40 super-bright LEDs instead of 66, the Mini-Z LED Desk Lamp is available for $99 from ThinkGeek. The 36" long light sips about 7.2 Watts and can be clamped to table surfaces.

I've been thinking of replacing my desk lamp with LED. My old halogen throws off way too much heat.
If only they made LED replacements for those halogen double ended tubes...
I own both the Human Scale and the The Ecolight by IMG Lighting. The Human scale is a bit too expensive, but husband like it. He's a dentist and thought it would be funny to have it. ha ha ha =( grrr. . Dollar for dollar EcoLight is my favorite LED Desk lamp that I have come across it blends well with the Macs I have at home and its far and way the brightest LED lamp there. 600 lumens. And the color warmth and sharpness is spot on (its got dual warm and white LEDs).
I think alot of us as consumers keep seeing low wattage advertised but are never told how bright a lamp is or the color of it. Alot of LED lamps aren't bright enough and the color that it gives off can be too stark. The lamps listed only put out 280 lumens or 140 lumens or some figure like that. That isn't enough to read.... The recommend min is something like 500 lumens.
The ECO Light LED Desk Lamp by the IMG Lighting Company is also one of the less expensive ones $129 is a really good price. They've got a list of different considerations to look for in an LED lamp on their webite.
I own the Z bar. It's a great color of light, but it does have a few downsides. One, is that it throws off 6 individual light sources, so everything can have 6 shadows. It works best bounced off a wall. Also, for LEDs, I was surprised at how hot the last bar got. You also can't put it on a lightswitch because it doesn't maintain it's previous setting.
