Aaron's post on New York houses triggered my childhood fantasy of big city home life, which was rooted in the Brooklyn home of the Huxtables, aka Bill Cosby and family. Nevermind that the interior side windows and large backyard didn't really match up with the exterior shots of a brownstone rowhouse—it was my 7-year-old self's dream home.
Looking back, the Huxtable House isn't really my style, but it's got some good features worth noting. The open-plan kitchen changed little over the years; the homey space always provided the perfect environment for Cliff's heart-to-hearts with the kids and his midnight trips to the fridge.
Sure, the living room furniture was fussy, but the couch looked comfy and it was a good spot for Cliff and his wife, Clair, to cuddle. Like any good TV family home, the house itself wasn't the most memorable part of the show. The stuff that went on inside it was the real reason for watching.
Do you have a favorite nostalgic TV home? What are the details you remember?

My favorite TV home is Monica's apartment in Friends. I can never get enough of looking at it. It really makes me feel right at home to look at it. i love a lot of other interiors in TV shows but I think that one just makes me the happiest.
Roseanne. That set was so well dressed! I would never want to actually live there, but it reminds me of walking into a friend or neighbor's house growing up, well lived in and well loved. I love all the little details, like the Godzilla on the side table and the Elvis collector plates hanging on the walls.
I watched a lot of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as a kid, and that house was great: the huge kitchen with the built-in bench/breakfast nook, the pool house, that ginormous staircase in the living room...
Wonder Years, Roseanne, Perfect Strangers (that crazy apartment), and I always wanted Mr. Belvedere's bedroom. hA!
Yes, of course...even though it was before my time (yes, I had to mention that), I loved Southfork Ranch from Dallas. I loved the patio where the family often shared breakfast in the morning. I thought the idea of a family who had enough time to have breakfast on the patio on a weekday morning was so glamorous.
I must also mention the Golden Girls home, I loved the exterior shots at night. I loved how the house appeared to be nestled in foliage with warm lights peeking through the windows.
OK, I'll admit it - my favorite TV home has ALWAYS been the one on "The Golden Girls." It has absolutely no connection to my own style of decorating, but it always seemed so warm, welcoming, comfy and completely unpretentious.
The kitchen always seemed to be the ideal place for gossip and random bitching over a cup of coffee, and the living room seemed to be the perfect setting for crazy canasta parties fueled by plenty of Scotch-and-water.
The apartment on Boy Meets World that they got during the college years. Loved that place thought it was the epitome of cool when I was in 8th grade.
I think I'm showing my age here:
Clarissa's bedroom from Clarissa Explains It All. So awesome
Not a real person, but, Arnold's bedroom from Hey Arnold. Remote-controlled everything
The Jeffersons. Oh! and Will and Grace. Well there not really houses but whatever.
I love Marge Simpson's corn on the cob kitchen curtains. :-)
I ALWAYS wanted the Uncle Bill's high rise apartment on Family Affair!
Major Nelson's house in "I Dream of Jeannie"
I prefer the Carrington mansion of Dynasty, especially the exteriors
Oh, I am so old... The Brady Bunch House. I thought it was so cool, and embraced the '70s modernist design aesthetic (some of the furniture could have been more so). Orange formica sends me...
Have to say that I also found the Golden Girls home soothing and comforting... wish I could watch some re-runs now!
I loved Kate & Allie's place, because it was in the West Village and HUGE, and Jessica's house in Maine on Murder She Wrote -- because it was always so cozy and ordered and safe, and I have always dreamed of living in Maine.
Mary Richard's studio apartment on the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Her first one before she moved to the fancy high rise apartment and Rhoda lived upstairs in the attic. I think if I lived there I wouldnt have the patience to fold and unfold the sofa everyday however!
I love TV homes from the 60's and early 70's. Ann Marie's apartment in Manhattan (That Girl) that no struggling actress could possibly afford and Mary Richard's studio apartment in Minneapolis (The Mary Tyler Moore Show) with the tiny kitchen and the pull-down stained glass partition. And the fabulous Davis apartment on Family Affair with the large balcony that overlooked Central Park.
I always loved the I dream of jeannie house too
And I loved the brady bunch stair case!
when I was little, I liked the girls apt in too close for comfort. (remember that 80's couch? heheheheh)
Count me in with mschatelaine. The Brady house was uber swank. It represented the perfect blending of both Carol and Mike's previous homes and tastes as seen in the pilot episode, mid century modern for Mike and eclectic modern ranch for Carol.
Webster's house with the secret passage through the clock and silver spoons with the train
I want the house from Say Anything or Disturbia, large California bungalows
Here's another vote for Clarissa's bedroom. She was so artsy!
my favorite thing in the huxtable house was the jacob lawrence painting hanging in the living room.
@londonverve: I am with you on the Golden Girl's house. I wasn't in to interior design when watching it, but I loved their house and wanted to move to Florida because of it.
I am now over Florida and the decor of the house. I still watch the show and it is still hilarious.
Blanche's bedroom on The Golden Girls was a trip! Totally fabulous. I also loved their lanai. Ok, I love The Golden Girls more than life itself, hahahaha.
def clarissa's room! and i love carrie's apartment from sex & the city. also, the Full House house, with fun uncles in the basement :)
How has nobody mentioned the Tanner home from Full House? I loved that their renovations and add-ons were part of the story, and the house grew and changed with the family. The garage became Joey's room, then a recording studio. The attic became Jesse, Rebecca and the twins' first home. The whole drama of DJ wanting her own room. The pink bunny wallpaper from Stephanie's old room/Jesse's first room. And who didn't love that bizarre alcove in the back of the living room--what was that stuff??
Yes, I really really loved Full House...
oh good one mary tyler moore's. always liked bob newharts apartment (on his old 70s show)
Another Brady Bunch house vote here.
Several houses that have been on CSI: Miami.
Little House on the Prairie.
Robin's Nest on Magnum P.I.
M. Baryshnikov's NYC apt. on Sex and the City.
The Munsters
the brady bunch... I found that staircase endlessly fascinating.
I agree with timmy jr. about the jacob lawrence print in the huxtable's living room--a bright spot in that house.
I dream on Jeamie--loved the interior of her bottle.
But I have to say the winners are the Munsters and the Addams family!
I love Carrie Bradshaw's apartment on Sex and the City!
Definitely Mary's studio and Jeannie's bottle!!!
I guess I never thought about the house in the Cosby Show (or from any other show), just the family. I always wanted to be a part of that family. They were always so happy and having so much fun. :)
I coveted the Cosby house, but wondered why they always wore their shoes in the house. It still irks me!
I have to say Full House too. Candace Cameron was my idol.
When I was a young teen and watching 90210 I wanted a Jack and Jill bathroom like Brandon and Brenda.
Spike's different lairs and Giles' place on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Also the Adams Family, Clarissa's room, and OH! Michael and Hope's house on Thirtysomething. I was a teenager then and dreamed of living there. (I'm not ashamed to say) Now I'm really liking the goth interiors of the Salvatore home on the Vampire Diaries. I could go on...
Sigh. I watch too much tv.
Ahhhh....how could I have forgotten the Tanner house? Just plain awesome, and the fact that it was in SF doesn't hurt either.
Full House was definitely the first thing I thought of! I remember really wanting to live in a house like that when I was younger, especially because it was so different from the boring Florida house(s) I grew up in.
The Brady Bunch was before my time, but I grew up watching reruns on Nick@Nite and I loved that house too!
Someone mentioned the Apartment in Boy Meets World, which was cool, but I thought the family's house was great too. And, from the same era, I remember really loving the house from Step By Step, especially the kitchen!
And more recently, Lorelei's house on Gilmore Girls is, I think, my ideal home. I love the exterior shots and just the cozy feel of the whole place and all their quirky accessories.
I loved the Bewitched house, with the open staircase, the huge fireplace wall, and the patio doors to the backyard (not to mention the cool oven).
Lorelei and Rory's house is my all time favorite. Not really my style but it actually looked lived in.
the halliwell house on "charmed" as well as phoebe's moroccan apartment. i'd update the furnishings in the family house, but it was spacious and sunny and really cool.
mona's apartment on "half 'n half." she was a very boho girl and her pad reflected that perfectly.
belle's apartment on "secret diaries of a call girl" i'd want it a bit less mod, but the play of color is pretty fun.
the humphreys' dumbo loft on "gossip girl" is fantastic, especially jenny's blue bedroom. the open kitchen/livingroom is really warm.
the brunette's old apartment on "how i met your mother" (can you tell i don't necessarily watch these shows?) - her livingroom had a wonderful, global interplay of color.
the condo on "chuck"
rory gilmore's poolhouse (made over by the gramps) on "gilmore girls." the lorelais' house was cute, but i'd have changed out a lot of the fleamarket, lace and frou frou.
The Facts of Life, though it never made sense to me how they could have a full-sized house with a full-sized store (first a gourmet-food store, then a gift shop) attached to the back, with little actual separation between the two. Or why the girls continued to share bedrooms into their 20s.
Definitely Golden Girls. Their house always gave me the same vibe as my now-deceased great-aunt's house, though she lived in Arizona, not Florida, and her house was smaller and plainer than the Golden Girls' house.
And Ellen DeGeneres' house in that sitcom she had in the 90s... I believe it was sort of Spanish/Mediterranean-style. (I don't know why this one popped into my brain; I haven't seen that show in years.)
The Walsh's house in Beverly Hills 90210. I loved that bathroom that Brenda and Brandon shared, and the beach apartment that Kelly and Donna got in college (though the decor left something to be desired).
Living Single--they made having roommates seem so cool. I wanted neighbors like Kyle and Overton to chill with...come to think of it: I liked Kyle and Overton's place better than the girls'...I also liked Mona's decor (especially the coffee table/trunk) on Half and Half. In more than a few ways our design sensibility is parallel.
Samantha's house in Bewitched. She had a Papa Bear chair!!!! And kitchen appliances from heaven.
And though I hate colonial style, I loved the ambiance at the Stratford Inn, in Newhart.
Brady Bunch house all the Way! That place was soo awesome. All of the textures made me drool, Terra Cotta tile floor in the hall, stone planter and fireplace, brick columns and wood paneling.
I remember really coveting Punky Brewster's room. She had that decorated window shade...the awesome bed....stuff hanging all over the place....
Monica's colorful apartment was pretty great, but I always thought the designers missed the mark when it came to matching it to her personality. People who are weird about cleaning don't tend to have open cupboards in the kitchen or huge coffee tables that are hard to vacuum under.
My favorite was Lucy's apartment in I Love Lucy (I watched a lot of Nick at Night when I was little). And I also loved the Bewitched house. In I Dream of Jeanie, I don't remember his house, but I LOVED the interior of her genie bottle! I spent hours fantasizing over it - having that cozy little space full of pillows... so cozy. Lucy's apartment was just really well designed and I loved how she was always updating it. It was mid century but still really homey and on a small enough scale that it just looked seemed comfortable. Her bedroom was weird though - two twin beds with matching his and hers dancer pictures over the beds. The living room and kitchen I loved though. It seemed like home to me! The actual shows that were on when I was growing up were not great design inspiration, so it's lucky I watched a lot of reruns of old shows - I don't think anyone here would swoon over Seinfeld's place. Yuck.
Punky Brewster's treehouse was what my childhood is missing.
ditto "living single"
and joan's house on "girlfriends" she liked to change pieces a lot, but overall it was a very nice place. toni's condo was too princessy and all white. lynn's redec of joan's house was pretty nice too. and when maya got her own apartment, they did a great set up there.
also, shelly's apartment on "eve" and the girls' dress shop.
I always thought the Fresh Prince house was cool. The Living/dining sets from the earlier shows were kind of heavy and Edwardian, but the later '90s episodes had this nice, pastel thing going on. The staircase and built-in shelves in the family room were nice, too. I know many people hate it, but I always like the Frasier House. Extremely pretentious but nice to look at.
I didn't really love the Brady Bunch house, but I really, really wanted to live in that six kid two-bedroom suite. In the 80's I wanted Nina Cortlandt's house on All My Children. (I liked the Munster house too, by the way.) Now I like all of the houses on Modern Family. Oh, and I LOVED Debra Messing's house in The Starter Wife. And Hank's house in Californication! That might be my favorite. And now I'm thinking I might watch too much TV.....
I always wanted to live in the Seavers house from Growing Pains (KC didn't hurt any, can't say the same thing now though). I loved that they had two staircases (as did the Tanners). Funny though, I wouldn't want a kitchen that was so seperate from the living room.
Ohhh, I think my favourite would have to be the Taylors from Home Improvement. Open plan and just modern enough for a family. Attached garage which this girls needs thanks to the 20cm of snow we've gotten overnight. I loved the built in beds in one of the boys rooms.
Here's another vote for Webster! I still dream about having a home some day with a secret passage...
Wow. I can't believe that there are 53 comments and no one has mentioned Fasier's cool bachelor pad. It's a testament to the good interior design that it barely changed over the show's 10 year run, and yet looked as good in the last episode as it did in the first.
Growing up, for me it was a toss up between The Monkey's firehouse and Uncle Bill's place.
I still love those homes, but now i have to say i also love Monica's apartment and belive it or not... the Bunker home. I can totally see the renovations i would make. It's not the most glamorous home, but it's looks like it has great bones and could really be made to look nice.
I also agree w/Baby Yaga on the interior of Jeannie's bottle. I also liked Mary's studio, but prefered Rhoda's place. It was small, but super cool.
i would want to live at fisher & sons.
Bewitched, The Golden Girls and Brothers & Sisters.
Seinfeld's apartment!
I also wanted to live inside Jeannie's bottle.... or room with Jessica Fletcher whose house looked so cozy and safe. My favorite though was definitely the retro house on "Rags to Riches"; I don't know if anyone else even watched that show. It was not on long. It ran in the 80s, but it was set in the 60s and each bedroom matched the personality of the girl(s) that lived in it.
I'm only 32, but I am a die-hard fan of "The Avengers" (not the comic, the '60s TV show). When the show was still in B&W, Mrs. Peel's apartment was absolutely divine! She had an open-concept, rocket-shaped stainless steel fireplace in the MIDDLE of her living room and gorgeous white sectionals. After they went to color, her new place was the avocado and orange combo that was so popular then, but her apartment in the early 60s is something I aspire to now.
I can watch The Golden Girls after a stressful day and something about the view of the house at night just starts to melt the day away. And Mary Richard's apartment was the perfect single gal spot. I live very near the home they used in the opening shots (Mary's apartment was on the second floor and Rhoda's was in the attic.) The house is no longer painted white, but you'd recognize the shape anywhere. I think of the MTM show as I blade around the same lake pictured in the opening credits.
