My roommate and I had a similar dilemma--two bikes that needed a home (only we had no extra room to spare). We love Ryan's DIY solution to make the most out of a hallway...
Ryan tells us that the bike rack is his own design built by his contractor. To us, it looks like two cables suspended from the ceiling that meet below. For the cables, an L bracket has been attached on both sides for each bike to rest. We really like how the bikes are accessible but remain out of the way. The bike theme is continued with the framed bicycle poster in the background (also DIY'd). Because it was too expensive to custom frame, Ryan screwed plexigrass and panel mould to the wall--great job!

I wouldn't doubt if there was another idea behind the plexi poster--wall protection! If the plexi should get really scratched up just change it out.

Love fixed gear and love the bike rack...
only problem i see is with most of these bike racks they are shown with nice road bike or fixed gears that have nice skinny handle bars. I have a tension mounted bike rack in my office and because of the handlebars on my hybrid bike it still sticks out pretty far.
But i love the fact that i didn't put any holes in the wall or anything, all tension.
Yeah I also have a hybrid and my bf has a mountain bike so this probably couldn't be a solution for us. But it's a cool idea for a lightweight fixie.
Any suggestions for hanging a heavy steel beach cruiser? Would the tension rods support a bike that heavy?
does anyone have any advise on finding a piece of art such ast this?
llj71 -- the cables are strong enough for a lot more than a beach cruiser. you just need to make sure that your anchors are strong enough (think heavy duty lag eyes). the only real concern there is what jmorey and graciela mentioned -- it would have to stick out a good way from the wall because of those handlebars.

I love that the bikes bring out the colors in the poster. I assume that was intentional?
if you were hanging a big beach cruiser (and have though about it with mine as well) since your handlebars will be out there pretty far. you could remove the front wheel and turn the handlebar so the fork is pointing sideways and the handles are inline with the bike. Wall problem solved. With the front tire removed you could stack them closet together if you had multiples as well.
If I did it that way i could get my bikes another 4" to the wall until the pedals hit, I just don't want to deal with the front wheel all the time, i like to take it off and go.
Could you tell us what sort of hardware you used for the "L' peices that hold the bikes? It looks like the aircraft cable passes through the upright portion. What are they and where did you get them? Thanks! Love the simplicity of them.
