We feel guilty for stealing a peek at Artdsgnr's apartment since we're not sure if he lives in Portland, OR or ME. If anyone knows the skyline up there and can tell, go for it.
All that aside, this is a pretty dreamy layout and he's added a number of DIY touches like the big art on the wall. You can also find him at DesignWeld.com.

White Enamel Flatwa...
He lives in Portland and I tell him all the time how nice his place is, despite his chair addiction > space.
I meant to say Oregon!
Portland, OREGON...
Fun to take a look inside some of the bldgs that I've only seen from the outside!
omigod. i have to share this great tip with you guys.
i read somewhere last weekend that, get this, THEY ACTUALLY MAKE CHAIRS NOW THAT WERE NOT DESIGNED BY CHARLES AND RAY EAMES!!!!!!
can you believe that?
Very nice! I like everything about this place, but especially the low media cabinet. Where did it come from?
I love the large-scale art. As I often tell myself, there is nothing wrong with a little chair addiction.
hmpf.
Can someone ID the bookcase in the photo above?
Sydney - I think the person made it themselves from an IKEA piece (LACK shelving).
There was a post (on some open thread???) about how they did it with some tracks and some custom cut plexi-glass. I thought it was pretty awesome.
I love the chairs in this place, too. I own 4 Thonet bentwood office chairs (pre-Eames). I like what I like and that's the sole determinant (other than $) of what goes in my house.
1:47PM,
Jealous much? What's so snobby about it?
Hey Maxwell, thanks for choosing my pic!
opoponax - yeah, love the sarcasm. I have had lots of other furniture designers in my collection, but really, really love Charles and Ray. It's not that I'm uneducated about different designers, it's my personal choice to have whittled down things to a lot of Eames stuff.
Sydney - glad you like the cabinet. It's actually a cheapie IKEA shelf and I modified it with aluminum track and sliding poly doors to hide all the wires and components.
heps - thanks for supporting my armshell weakness!
What's wrong with chosing one designer as a favorite? At least MattPDX has enough good taste to select Eames. It could be a lot worse!
Aristocrat - I think the poster was referring to the opoponax as the snob.
In case no one else says it, awesome Gorillz figurines, toys ? whatever it's awesome ;)
Very cool place Matt.
Don't worry about opoponax. That whole Eames chair thing is a particular pet hate of hers and anyone that has one or more is targeted regardless of other design and furniture decisions. But we still love her. Or at least I do. Jonathan secretly loves her too even though he could never, ahem, have her.
Have you ever seen this site?
http://ikeahacker.blogspot.com
Your media cabinet looked familiar to me (or maybe I dreamt about something like it) so I thought you may have contributed to ikeahacker but obviously not. Your cabinet looks great and would be a great addition to that site.
Well, well..
A bit of photoshop tweaking went into this apartment...
http://flickr.com/photos/artdsgnr/166902274/in/set-72157594235600838/
Seems that big ol' art piece aint real..
Foul I say! Remove this apartment at once!
love the apartment - great job. i wanted to ask about the housing for the fridge in your kitchen - were you involved with that, or did the kitchen come that way? i ask because i'm currently dealing with a kitchen in which the fridge is hanging out in the middle of nowhere. a housing thing like the one you have would be a perfect way to integrate it with the rest of the kitchen.
Columbo, I finished the painting Sunday night. There's a new pic to prove it. That mockup was made back in June.
Damn, haters!
tessa, glad you like the Gorillaz toys... the toys are another weakness of mine.
jamiepup, I'll definitely send something to that ikeahack site... thanks for the tip!
sara, I wasn't involved with this kitchen, but most cabinet makers have that type of thing as an option. In fact, I'm thinking my cabinets are from ikea anyway, you might start on their site for some clues.
The haters are always ready to pounce...
I love the space and I too have a chair addiction.
I LOVE IT!
Where did you get your cabinet/sideboard from?
I live in the area and just assume that all those lofts in the pearl are WAY out of my reach financially.. but i am curious if you don't mind, how much did you pay for it? I love it!
yeah, i just wanted to come back and chime in that i DO like your place overall. i especially like the fact that you're not afraid of ikea. and the light. and the big art!
jamiepup's right. the AT obsession with eames chairs just really gets to me sometimes. despite the fact that i love the eameses, their chairs, etc.
Would you mind please sharing where you got your bed and dresser? they're both very much in line with what i've been searching for. thanks!
I am salivating over your space & love all the Eames (so there!) especially dig the big art on the wall (and yes, the skeleton in the fishtank.)
what brand is that turn-table?
Nice place indeed.
Tell ya what... if I could find a slew of Eames designed chairs for less than the worth of my kidneys I'd snatch 'em up.
I have to say on ething that I really like about this place is that despite the relative neutral and mellow palatte and lack of artwork (save the large piece [btw I photoshop-mock everything I do to my place- much easier than an expensive mistake!]) the saturation and intesity found within the furniture is allowed to shine. One's eye is easily drawn from the silver lamp arm/body to the silver bases on them shell chairs to the silver turntable etc... same goes for the wood...
And I believe the TT is a Technics...
curious; what direction do your windows face- methingks not east as you have no shades...Imagine that place bathed with orange/gold light...mmm
Way to represent the PNW with those nice wood tones Matt!
I have to admit though, I laughed at Op's joke :)
Wow, I want to move in right away.
jamie pup, i might put you in a dress and call you samantha before saddling up to opo
dear mattPDX -- stunners, well done, especially with the sliding doors for the TV cabinet -- ideal ikea-cloaking devices. quick query, were those poly sliding doors ikea too?
grazie
Very cool Matt... love what you did with the place. Especially a few of the details (not to mention this photo, which is perfect for today.
http://flickr.com/photos/artdsgnr/175062354/
(for those who might not be aware - today is "Talk Like A Pirate Day." I kid you not)
P.S. LOVE how the huge art project turned out! I suspect that does a great job of cutting down echos and noise in your loft.
This place rocks, I love the minimalism. The large-scale art piece is fantastic!
Congrats MattPDX! I knew someone would discover your place soon. And Columbo, I can vouch for Matt's work of art - if you delve deeper into his flickr photos he has photographs of some of his process in creating it.
Chairs? Are their chairs here?
Yeaaah Matt!
Rod - that cabinet/sideboard was bought from an antique shop in town... it's unmarked, so I don't know much more about it's origin.
CM - I'm renting from a private owner, so I'm not sure how much it originally was bought for. I'm happy you like though!
Opoponax - no harm done. I'll admit I am kinda mental when it comes to armshells... I've had even more before, but once in a while can manage to sell a few off.
Chris - bed is Ikea Malm, dresser is unmarked vintage. Good luck on your search!
Kat - the turntable is Audio Technica, although Julian has a good eye - it's almost a direct copy of the Technics 1200
Julian - the window is South, and I have roller shades up there. Although it's only sunny for about a month in Oregon! Thanks for the kind words.
Cara - the polycarbonate doors were cut at TAP Plastics - they had lots of sweet colors and textures too. Some links and info was posted here - http://flickr.com/photos/artdsgnr/214324684/in/set-72157594235600838/
Victoria - Hey, how are you!? Thanks for gettin' my back too.
Everyone else, thanks for looking and for the nice comments and criticism! Hope I answered everyones questions. Dang, it's stressful having your junk up on display! Oh, and thanks Jaime (www.design-milk.com) for the warning this morning!
matt
Hi Matt. Your place is peaceful and gorgeous. What record is on the turntable?
I want my home to look that clean and orderly someday...
lovely place. matt, would love to feature your ikea hacks. especially the media unit. great stuff.
i can't believe no one's asked about the lamp. maybe everyone else recognizes it or something, but i don't think i've seen it before. where's it from?
I also would like to know where the lamp came from. Too bad (for me!) about the vintage unmarked dresser. I've spent weeks pouring through furniture websites searching for something like that - modern enough to look clean in a smallish space, but with a little character.
Nice job, Matt.
Jen
Gorgeous apartment. I love the warmth of it (perhaps because of the blonde wood?) even though it's quite spare. I would love to see a wall of color or a big artwork in the bedroom, but it sounds like you are figuring out the art now.
Jonathan, I hope you meant "sidling" up. If not, I just learned way too much about your proclivities.
Hey Matt...
Stumbled across this interesting find this morning... thought you might get a laugh...
YOWZA!
I'm an idiot...
Let's try this again
Eames chair overkill.
For the third time...
http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/fur/209723478.html
(all of a sudden html tags no longer work?)
No go?
Hi Priscilla, the record was Amiina, and I totally recommend. http://www.aminamusik.com/
Jules - I'll send you a note with some details. thanks.
Erin and Jen - the lamp is from Adesso, and the best price I found on it was ebay - search for "Jumbo Architect Lamp"
Fiona - I agree with you on more artwork... I have some more ideas in my nogggin that I just have to start working on. Thanks for your comments!
Julian - I always love to see what an eames search on CL will drudge up! That one is hilarious!
opoponax--
I also read somewhere that if you don't have something nice to say, keep your trap shut.
But we are obviously reading different things.
Nice job Matt, thanks for the update. Looks great. And with a rug somewhere, even greater!! ;)
Seriously, I think it is harder and harder for people to share their success stories and house pride here.
I just finished a room for someone, wanted to share it here, and the room's owner said no... he said he thought there was too much bile and nastiness of late here (not necessarily on this thread, although it lingers here too...) to have his joy in the completed room peed upon.
Sad.
beautiful place. especially like the lego pirates!
Holy crap this is in my building!
Matt -- I'm Dennis, great to meet you. I've got a place on the third floor.
Howdy, neighbor!
Nice place. Dig the bed, mind if I ask who makes it?
Oh my god- marry me.
Seriously- I'm a good cook- you won't regret it.
Patrick - thanks for your comments... and also now I'm contemplating that rug...
Dennis - hello to you too, neighbor!
Darren - it's Malm from IKEA
Athalie - yes, I'll marry you, but know I'll have a iron-clad pre-nup to protect the lounge and my records!
Ahaha. I have no problem with a pre-nup...We can have a clause: "All material items purchased pre-union are retained by their original owners in the case of a seperation and subsequent division of assets." Sound fancy enough for ya? ;-)
