So how many of you have organized your books according to colour, like our industrious and organized Flickr poster, "chotda" has? [Raises hand]. Look at this beautiful display! The sheer audacity of it all...we're impressed, and a tad bit jealous. Some may argue this is a poor way to organize books, but we'd disagree, since those of us visually oriented often remember books not by their titles, but by the colour of the cover. Some of us indeed judge a book by its cover...and then decide where to store it accordingly.

And then upon reading some of the comments underneath the photo, we found a link to a nearly as impressive colour coded collection of CDs by another Flickr poster, "sugarfreak". We love these folks who are so dedicated to making colour a part of their lives, even when they're be a bit obsessive (perhaps excessive to some).

I know that I'm waaaay over a year late on this, but:
I have my books arranged by color and it's just freaking lovely. I don't mind in the slightest looking through them if I'm trying to pull one out to re-read or loan; but then again I don't have 1000, only a couple hundred. If my budget permits and my collection is allowed to grow and grow, I will take the time to create a simple catalog. I will make an excel sheet documenting the title, author, and spine color. Because I also have each color section arranged by height, I won't organize each color section alphabetically; rather I'll just peruse my reds or yellows for the title. That doesn't seem difficult to me. Or cruel to my books. Rather, I'm turning my books that I love and cherish into a bright and beautiful eye-catcher.
I think a lot of people don't organize their books anyway. They randomly put them on bookshelves. What's wrong with wanting them to look nice as a whole? It doesn't make their content less important, and it certainly doesn't make their owner less intelligent.
I also agree that we usually remember what our favorite books look like, which would make it easier for us to find them.
