This inviting patio caught our eye with an intriguing little detail: each sitting atop a tiled and a wrought-iron garden stool, two cigar boxes used as planters. They look like little jack-in-the-boxes filled with greenery.

We love this idea for putting a collection to active use. While CalamityJon isn't certain the arrangement will hold up, we can definitely appreciate the resourcefulness, even if it's only in the short term.

What a great idea for old cigar boxes - I love it. You can also paint on them... Ed Musante does beautiful bird paintings on them and shows at Paul Thiebaud Gallery here in SF. Very cool! http://adsl-64-166-29-142.dsl.snfc21.pacbell.net/musante/paintings/49.htm
Oh, and nice outdoor chairs! ;)
I spray paint the boxes and plant succulents. They make great gifts
