Okay, initially we noticed the terrific dining set and pinball machine in this photo tagged apartmenttherapymontreal. But what really struck a chord with us on second glance was the lighting over the table: those are actually clarinets!
AT reader Pat took these old clarinets and refurbished them as pendant lights for use in his loft. We always see inexpensive old musical instruments that no longer work properly. How to use them? Well, we're guessing Pat saw a lamp shade in the horned shape of the clarinet and, voila!
We'd like to know more about the wiring: did this have to be done professionally? What type of bulb fits a clarinet? Nice job, Pat! See more of Pat's loft, and his friend Eve's loft, too, on Eve's flickr photostream.

I guess this could be adapted to otehr instruments as well : horns, trombones, tubas, trumpets, and a triangle towel rack, a drum coffee table, a piano dining table, a harmonica coaster ....
ok maybe not the coaster.
Hi, Eve here.
Pat knows a guy in Montreal that specializes in that type of projects; these were custom made for his loft. He also has a car horn wall sconce and a hi-hat (as in drum set) table.
His place is amazing, you should do an AT Tour of it!
I'll tell him about this post and I'm sure he can fill you in on all the details.
That's jazzy!
I have an old pinball machine just like that. I wish I had space for it.
When I started playing clarinet in 4th grade, my grandfather told me that HIS father also played clarinet...nice family tradition. He also told me that his father collected clarinets, and the ones that could not be refurbished were turned into table lamps. The bell was attached to a base so it could sit on a flat surface and the wires ran through to the top where there was no mouthpiece, but the actual bulb socket. My grandfather unfortunately did not know what happened to any of these lamps, but I've been obsessed with the idea of making one of my own ever since!! I really want to try...
Wow! What a surprise to see my loft on AT! This is quite a honor for me. You have no idea! I'm at lost for words... well almost.
Eve has a tendency to come over to my place and walk around and take pictures. In this shot, I wasn't even aware my picture was taken. Take my word for it, this isn't one of those staged, glossy magazine type photo. I'm sure glad I keep my place clean!
And you are right AT, those are real metal clarinets hanging from a 14 f high ceiling. They are all different and they were professionally outfited by a local. I had this vision of hanging clarinets for a long time but had no idea has to how to follow through with the vision. One day, I passed in front of Auger Halogene, here in Montreal, when I saw them in the store front window! When I asked Mr Auger how much he would charge for 3 of them, he quoted me a price of 600$. A bit expensive I though. "What if I come up with my own clarinets?", I asked. "250$, but they are very hard to find and you want 3", he replied. A month later, I came back with all 3 . I bought them on Ebay for no more then 30$ each. His reaction was priceless!
Another quick note, AT didin't know that this photo also fit the criteria for September's Pet Design Month. You will notice in the background that my dog Jedi is eating her food under the pinball. My dillema was to separate my cat Bowling's food from the dog's. So now the cat's bowl sits at the very top of the pinball. Problem solved!
