Flickr Finds: Cat Merrick’s Sandblasted Plates

Cat Merrick has taken a set of thrift store porcelain plates with idyllic, if not kitschy, winter scenes on them and given them a new life. By sandblasting the surface finish to reveal the bare porcelain beneath, Cat is able to selectively reveal the pattern that was once there. More after the jump…

At first glance, these plates seem to have an almost abstract impressionist painted look to them. But at closer inspection, you can see varying degrees of the original design. Leaving only "drips" of the original image gives these plates a unique and updated appeal.

Also on her page is this rose patterned plate with only a slice of original finish. The sandblasted treatment gives these formerly droll pieces a great face lift! We can't wait to see Cat's next designs...
