Everyone who knows a toddler or preschooler knows that stepstools are a big deal for their growing sense of independence. The ubiquitous plastic Ikea stepstool is a staple in most homes, but when you want something equally rugged and safe but a bit more aesthetically pleasing (and only a bit more expensive), the Flip Stool is a solid bet.

The backrest means that this stepstool doubles as handy low seating all the way up to eight years old. It also makes it easy for young children to maneuver the stool to wherever they need it (another big deal for your average young 'un).

The Flip Stool comes in two sizes -- Joe Modern ($25) and Tito Large ($31) -- and is available in either natural wood or white finish.
