My boyfriend and I just recently rearranged our bedroom and moved the bed away from the wall. Partly because we didn't want to have it right against the window. We're still debating whether to put nightstands on each side or put a high narrow table behind it like this one from CB2: http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=114&f=3440&viewall=1. Actually, one of their catalog's shows a floating bed with two pedestals behind it and each one has a reading lamp.

By the way, my bf and I felt a lot more comfortable in the room since we moved the bed. Maybe there is something about good flow and energy after all.

I have considered doing this many times, but my room is just not wide enough or long enough to make it work. And how do you deal with the power cords to the bedside lamps...?

From what I understand, it's actually bad feng shui to _not_ have the bed against the wall. It's better to have the back protected with the wall (since we don't have eyes in the back of head to see if something evil this way comes.)

All that said and done, it'd definitely nice to have a change in scenery once and a while.

I think it depends on the layout of the bedroom. I had a friend (who also happens to have a great eye for design) float his bed and it looks great. Someone not so design-savvy might not pull it off. I say go with what feels right for you.

I would love to do so but the geometry & size of my loft prevents it. Unless I downsize the bed. (That's not going to happen.)

I think this is a great idea though.

I don't really have a choice -- our bedroom has three windows, four doors, a fireplace, and very little wall space. The bed has to float!

i actually can't remember when i had my bed up against the wall last. i love having my bed float in the center (or nearly centered) of the room. especially in the summer when the curtains can blow in the breeze. i feel like i'm on my own private island every night.

Bad Feng Shui? So what! Do what works for your room.

I looked up bed arrangement after reading Maxwell's book. He said the footboard should always point at the door. I could not accomplish this in either one of my bedrooms. I found a great website on bed arrangement for proper feng shui on HGTV.com and it turns out your headboard can face in any direction each direction just has different meanings. I had been told the headboard could only face the east which was total nonsense.
I have thought about having the walls extended beyond the door to frame in the bed. This looks good in design pictures but I am wondering how they dust and change the linen.

I don't think feng shui writers had apartment dwellers in mind. Sometimes you just have to put the bed where the bed fits...

I find the whole feng shui thing funny. If someone said, "Jesus says I should have my bed against the wall." or "My horoscope says I should never put my bed against the wall." everyone would hoot. Yet if something violates the "principles" of fung shui it is somehow taken as scientific or at least reasonable. Very odd.

Elvis wants me to put my bed wherever I want :)

EllieMae - Word. I think feng shui's a lot of fun, but sometimes it seems like the only difference between it and batty philosophies is that feng shui is ridiculously complex, couched in strange terms, and has the mysterious (trendy?) air of ancient Eastern philosophy. Thus, people feel strangely drawn to it. Plus, it makes you seem a lot smarter than pontificating about How Jesus Would Decorate.

Whatever. People can float their bed, coat it with chocolate, or chop it up with a chainsaw for all I care. Call it the anti feng shui. :)
