So much of sustainable design is about designing with your environment in mind, and every site presents its own opportunities and challenges. Brisbane is the most populous city in Queensland, Australia and it has experienced three major floods since colonisation. This award-winning design by Brisbane based Dion Seminara Architecture sets new standards in flood safe home design without sacrificing aesthetics and liveability.

The concept house is designed on posts to allow up to 4 metres of active floodwater to flow through the ground floor without putting pressure on the main structure and uses materials that are easily cleaned post flood. Large screened awnings capture natural ventilation and allow natural light without sacrificing privacy, and the first floor awnings can be used for solar panels and water systems.
