We've talked a lot about using pendants as a way to anchor the dining room table, but what if you're a renter and you can't hard-wire a new fixture into your home? A floor lamp can shed light onto the table, and it's more flexible than an overhead lamp.
To find something that holds its own in the dining room, look for a large-scale lamp that arcs over the table or has an adjustable base that you can angle. On the high end, we really love the Castiglioni Arco Lamp, a modern classic that could cost you upwards of $2,500. For something less expensive, try the IKEA Samtid ($40) or CB2's Bauhaus Arc Lamp ($200).

I'm concerned about the positioning of the lamp in #4. I'd push my chair into the mirror and / or lamp one too many times and trash the whole thing!
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE #2. The light gray walls, bright chairs, and windows are awesome. The lamp, on the other hand, is charming but doesn't seem practical.
I have a Mega Tolomeo floor lamp over my dining table as well, but in the grey shade.

Great idea. There are pretty reasonably priced classic reproductions available such as http://www.17thandriggs.com/corafloorlamp.aspx that would make good options.
OMG, I've been searching for the picture in #5 for forever!!! That was one of my absolute favorite things in AT, and I wanted to try to do something similar!
Who knew it was in the same original post as the infamous Lincoln Pixel Art piece? Definitely my favorite house tour ever :)
Anyone know the manufacturer / model of the floor lamp in #4?
I considered Ikea's REGOLIT: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60103854.
Don't love it, but at $40, might be a good temp solution.
To my eyes, the only one that works to anchor the dining area as well as a pendant is number 3 -- but then they have the space to do it right, and spent the money to get a really impressive floor lamp.
