Ideas for Kitchen Floor in a Rental?

Good Questions

Q: We recently moved to Switzerland and found a nice flat in a city-centre location (Altbau, built 1900). The flat has hardwood flooring throughout except for the kitchen. I don't like the dark tiles at all. We are thinking of having the tiles replaced and are a bit stumped as to what to replace them with. I would quite like to continue with a similar hardwood floor — maybe with aged wood — but my husband would prefer medium-sized diamond-patterned tiles (2 colours; light and medium grey).

I am worried that the tiles would look quite busy. What do you think? Any thoughts? We are happy to change the wall color too, if that helps. We are partial to mid-century style.
