As I mention all the time, Flora Grubb Gardens is one of my favorite places in San Francisco. More than just a store, it is a brilliantly designed garden wonderland, a place as full of ideas & inspiration as it is of spectacular plants, so I was thrilled to see it celebrated for its good design...

While in town for the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, Billy Goodnick of Fine Gardening visited Flora Grubb Gardens and wrote a lovely essay on the design principles he saw embodied there. Though the examples he used were, of course, plant based, they easily carry over into all aspects of our homes, such as the color white's ability to intensify nearby colors, the drama potential of well-placed cuteness, and the reminder that for all the value of subtlety, "Sometimes ya just gotta come in with both barrels blazing". Well said, Mr. Goodnick, and as true in attitude, fashion, and cooking as it is in garden design.
