When a windowbox just isn't enough. For those who do not have a windowbox but have a green thumb, or would like to have a green thumb, consider the city's community gardens. This one has been on LaGuardia and Bleecker in the Village, satiating the greenery-needs of neighbors and passers-by, since 1981.

It's a beautiful place to stroll through, even if you don't have the urge to plunge a trowel into the earth. They welcome visitors with smiles and stories of their garden and for a dollar you can leave with a button that has a beautiful red tomato on it and wear it proudly on your backpack or lapel. Maybe you can even pick a flower and wear it proudly behind your ear. For information about New York City's community garden program, visit www.greenthumb.org. SKGR
