You may have noticed that part of the January Cure is bringing in flowers on the weekends — why not make it even easier on yourself by growing some of your own? I know I'd love to see a little dash of springtime in the midst of the winter gloom.
Sara from Our Best Bites shows how to get flowers to bloom indoors during the winter with just a few materials and some bulbs, like paperwhites, that don't require chilling first. Her instructions are very clear and detailed, and she even includes photos — it actually seems like something a black-thumbed person like me could tackle! I'd love to have a little pot of bright, blooming flowers to take the edge off of this gray, gray, and more gray weather outside…

I feel lucky to have mild winters here in The South. My bulbs outside started blooming this week ... it's nice to come home at this time of the year to flowers blooming in the yard!
FYI paperwhites are poisonous to cats & dogs.
This is great timing. Winters here are very long and not at all like where I'm from. I jokingly told someone who had just moved here that spring is the three days of the May long weekend when most people get their bedding plants.
My mom laments about springs back home. Two weeks ago it was my mom's birthday. My daughter and I bought her a small Wardian case that looks like a green house, some seeds, and some planting materials. She can start "spring" early in her home.
I'll have to show her this article too. Growing bulbs will be a great boost for her.
