The Whitney Museum Of American Art is well known for its innovative educational programming, and now kids everywhere can get in on the action without venturing onto Madison Avenue. The Whitney just launched For Kids, a new section of its site devoted to children ages 8 to 12.
Equal parts classroom, studio, gallery and online community, For Kids invites participants to think, create and exchange ideas. Featured artist pages provide biographies and overviews of each artist's work; current featured artists include Alexander Calder, Edward Hopper, Glenn Ligon, Claes Oldenberg and Cindy Sherman. The artist profiles are well written and accessible, and we love the quizzes, "talk back" buttons inviting kids to share their thoughts and "do it yourself" directives for art at home.
Interactivity is important on the site, but it seems like the ultimate goal is engagement. Through smart design, content development and pedagogy, For Kids sets out to make children think. Visit For Kids with your kid.
