Color Inspiration: It was time to move my 4-year-old into a big girl bed, which was the perfect opportunity to re-design her room. My starting piece in the room was the red wooden sentence on the desk hutch that says, "for the fun of it." I painted the desk and hutch in Benjamin Moore's Poolside Blue. Next came the red, pink, and white ikat curtain fabric. The choice of the pink and red allowed me to keep the one holdover from the nursery, the Sherwin Williams Icing pink walls. I wanted my daughter to have a fun room without being too girly or juvenile. The basics of this re-design need to last for a few years.

Tip for Using Color: I let objects in the room dictate the secondary colors. The Pez collection shelved over the closet door and the school artwork hanging on tension wire over the bed bring lots of color without diluting the impact of the main red, turquoise, and pink. I also built in some options with the current design. I fell in love with Victoria Hagan's Summer Squares, but at over $400 per yard it wasn't in the budget for a pre-schooler's room. Randomly, I found a Summer Squares remnant just large enough for one side of the bed cover. For the other side, I chose a $7 per yard quilting fabric in a tiny red and pink burst pattern. The turquoise pillow is solid on one side and has an orange grosgrain ribbon detail on the reverse. When we make the bed, we can mix it up a bit with the options.

Colors Used: Red, turquoise, and pink with bits of all colors around the room.

Thanks for your colorful entry Deanna and good luck!
