I don't know about you, but the sight of a Smeg refrigerator in a kitchen just makes me happy. I love how much personality they add to a room. They're so streamlined, so retro, so cheerful!
And there are so many colors to choose from! Whether you go neutral with white, silver or black, bold with orange or chartreuse, or graphic with stripes or a red cross, you simply can't go wrong. Me? I'm partial to color when it comes to my Smegs, and right now, I'm feeling bIue (Smegs, that is). I'm drooling over the peacock-colored one, and this sapphire blue version from West Elm is calling my name, too. Then again, the charcoal glam one at the end may have stopped my heart completely...
(I realize that the last one isn't exactly streamlined, retro or cheerful for that matter, but it's so drop-dead gorgeous, that I just had to include it!)
Which one gives you butterflies?

Cue the Red Dwarf references in 3, 2, 1...
I would kill to have one of these in my kitchen. In Red.
Seriously though, I've seen these in Italy and they're very cool. I don't know why our fridges are so big here in the US. They don't need to be.
Coolest thing ever. Had one. Would neve have one again. Not efficient, and all the bits in the door broke/cracked really easily (never happened with any other fridge); too big outside for the actual space you get inside. Also had 2 Dysons (upright and pull along) - sold both. Upright had incredible suction but was so heavy it was a pain to use (and I'm fairly strong). Roberts radio on the other hand is a thing of beauty with great sound quality.
they are extremely good looking though, maybe you could have used it as a closet?
Dysons are some of the lighest vaccuums I've ever used, and I'm on the small side.
I agree, sort of. Some people do need larger fridges. Families, for instance. I cook a lot and often for dinner parties and don't drive often and having the storage for many ingredients is helpful. I could be fine with a Smeg-sized fridge, but it would take some adjusting and I couldn't store as much food. As it is, my fridge is a lot smaller (17-18 cubic feet) than the typical mid range fridge that is sold today.
I went against everyon's opinion and advise and got mine in cream. I got it about 10 years ago and the color is cream. I have the small version (without the freezer) and still love it. yes, it's a bit too small. yes, it's not that practical. but I would buy it again!!

I've loved the look of SMEGs since I first saw one. Plus, I love the word "SMEG." It's a lot of fun to say! However, if I did actually splurge on a retro fridge, I think I'd go with a Big Chill, which has a similar look, but seems more practical, and possibly better quality.
I cook all my meals and don't always want to stop to pick up ingredients daily so even for a married couple, I really do appreciate my large american fridge. Oh and, my tap water is not great tasting, so my built in water/ice dispenser is a must-have for me.
That said, these are super cute, and if I were still single/living in the city/going out to eat more than cooking, I'd love one.
Pink would be my favorite if I was single gal for sure!!!!! I first saw the pink one in a Flickr friend in UK's kitchen. It was love at first sight.
Cream is pretty dreamy. I would love to own one. Just two of us and we don't need much space...all that personality!
sorry my previous post has so many typos and repetitions, I'm typing from my phone and the 'copy and paste' tricked me :)
I love the look, but since I read that they are of questionable quality, my desire has faded.
Love the look...very funky...especially when living in a small space!
"Bigger isn't always better".
Lovely!
I can see one in a corner alcove in my studio to be.
How timely. We are looking at a house on the market with an approx 6 X 8 ft kitchen, all of which needs to be replaced - falling apart 1972 appliances. I have been wondering about small fridges and people's experiences of them. I don't care how it looks as much as how well it works. Thanks for the reviews.
Love the look, concerned about reliability.
Otoh, I LOVE my dyson. I went thru about four vacuum cleaners in the past five years. Every single one of them was a lemon. Maybe it was just my bad luck. Then I bit the bullet and bought a dyson upright. That sucker is amazing and I never have a problem with it. And it's light. I have to empty it more frequently but now I am not afraid to vacuum or have to carry my screwdrivers and extra belts when all I want to do is clean the upstairs hallway.
I have a smaller frige similar in size though not as chic as a Smeg. I love the smaller size of the refigerator- easier to keep clean, takes up less room, etc. However I dearly miss having a larger frezzer. I love have ready to go meals in the freezer. But with the smaller size of the freezer I don't have room for much at all.
Whoa, my jaw hit the ground on that last one. Want!!
@YoNella, lol, that took me a minute. 'Smeghead!'
@thorndale - my brother and sister-in-law have a tiny kitchen and an amazing Liebherr 24" fridge that really uses space well. They have loved it - now about 5 years in. I think it is the CS 1360 model: http://www.liebherr.us/HGH/en-GB/products_us-hg.wfw/id-582409-0_25091-4
I have the pale blue one in my kitchen and LOVE it. I also have 2 small kids and cook at home a lot and never had a problem with bits falling off or fitting stuff in. It's a beauty and a good family fridge. I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.
Smeg's are cute but damn they are tiny! I suppose it is perfect for someone who lives alone.
I do like the retro look, but as someone who downgraded to a 9.2 cu. ft. refrigerator a year ago (I bought a Danby from Sears - http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_04687556000P?sid=IDx01192011x000001&kispla=04687556000P&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=33-134442120-2#reviewsWrap) my purpose was to scale the size of the appliance to my small kitchen, as well as my single man lifestyle. As opposed to wasting space on a "look," I'd rather have better, more affordable refrigerated in-cabinet options (drawers and bins).
call me a Smeghead, I want one so badly I'm looking for aluminum letters to stick on my current fridge. Wish they were available in Canada!!
I have had mine for just over a year and could not be happier with this purchase. It is perfect for my needs and the small freezer has made it easier to cut back on the frozen meals and buy more fresh. Though it does hold more than you might expect. I had just moved into my apartment when I got it so I am not sure how it might have effect my con ed bill but over all it is pretty low average less than 40.00 a month, so I do expect it has effected it much.
Everytime I look at it, it makes me happy, well worth the splurge.

p.s. also, I have not noticed any cracking or breakage of the inside organizers, as some else mentioned. It still all looks brand new.
Most Americans would rather do less trips for grocery shopping, hence the bigger fridge is one reason. American homes are also much bigger, is another reason.
Dysons are a waste of money. So what if I start to lose suction in a cheap bag vac, the bags are dirt cheap, unlike a Dyson.
while a small freezer may help one cut back on frozen meals, it doesn't help those of us with families that like to make large batches of meals (especially soups) and freeze what we do not eat right away for a later meal... (or freeze some of the veggies we get from our co-op delivery in the summer)
... they ARE beautiful, tho!
You can get a left or right hinge Smeg, so why do many of these have the hinge on the more awkward side?
My 1958 kitchen screams for an orange Smeg. However, I rent and someday I will own a place to keep a Smeg. Who knows which color that space might need? So, for the meantime, I bought a white 10cf LG. I would never, ever, go back to a large scale refrigerator.

And yes, I bought a fridge for a rental. Welcome to Los Angeles, where refrigeration is a privilege, not a right.
Dysons rock. Who told me so? My younger brother, whom I did not think had ever used a vacuum.
Regarding the choice of hinge side, it depends on the space you will be putting in and the clearance needed to open it. My door opens to the left, the stove would have been in the way had it gone to the right. So I am sure others chose theres accordingly as well.
That powder blue one...oh my. Perfection!
I am also looking into smaller, "euro" sized fridges. We currently have a big U.S.-style fridge in our kitchen that we bought right after we moved in, just before the baby came. We thought as a young married couple starting a family that we would need a lot of fridge and freezer storage. However, even though our family is growing we are using less and less space because how we shop, cook, and eat has become more healthy and fresh. Even looking ahead a few years when two elderly parents will join us, I don't see how we will need this giant fridge. I looked at Smegs when I first began to plan our kitchen remodel (which is still in planning, hasn't happened yet, but it's getting closer I can feel it). I did read that the quality is so hit or miss. I've since begun looking at global/American brands that make euro-sized fridges in their regular lines. You won't often find them on display at Best Buy or Sears, but you can order them through stores or the manufacturers website, even Amazon sometimes. I think if I shop carefully and swoop in at the right time, I'll get a good price. Plus, I'll have plenty of local repairment who know how to fix the fridge I have. It's weird how sometimes handymen are specialized, just like car repair shops. I wouldn't have imagined there were that many unique ways to make a fridge.
Exactly jdoey. If grocers were within a few blocks of home and it were easy to just pop in and out for a few things, then most Americans could probably get by with smaller refrigerators. I also like a larger refrigerator/freezer because it allows easier organizing, I hate needing to move a bunch of things to get that item in the back.
