I am all about the DIY lately, due to some budget redecorating. I also can never seem to find an inexpensive, yet interesting area lamp for my living room. Recently, I came across a tutorial for this quirky, but elegant lamp made out of a found, fallen tree branch.
If I can find a large and sturdy enough piece, I am definitely going to be trying out this project. However, instead of stain, how do you think it would look with a few coats of white paint?

White Enamel Flatwa...
LOVE!
there is something striking about this idea, but the result is not for me. I think the shade is not nearly bold enough to hold its own. As for white paint, we need to see the context to know.
At first glance, it looked like a large praying mantis with a lampshade on its head. It's a much more economical tripod lamp than the ones in yesterday's post. And this tripod does, in fact, have three legs, unlike some of yesterday's "tripod" lamps.
That's pretty cool, I have to check out the blog to read the how-to.
I have to admit I don't like the branch itself that much but that's a detail.
Great idea, but I agree that this particular execution is slightly lacking. The shade definitely isn't working for it.
I don't like it because it looks like a spider monster and takes up too much floor space. It might look great with a narrow branch and different shade.
Wow, full of Debbie Downers in here. The point is instructions to make your own. Sheesh.
I love it--it looks like an animated tree a la Hobbit. I say no to painting it white out of concern that it will lose its Brother's Grimm edge and will look adjacent to those white reindeer heads that were everywhere for a hot minute.
I like the idea! I just like to conserve my floor space with something smaller. If you can do it though, go for it!
Brother's Grimm is right. So cool! I agree a different shade might be better, but I like the natural stain -- not white. This photo is terrible, both the lighting and it's kind of an awkward placement next to the window. the pics on her site make it easier to see the potential in this guy.
LOL cafeen75! Debbie Downers is priceless.
I don't think I could live with this, it looks like it's tiptoeing over to stab you when you're dozing off...
Wonderful movement in this lamp and the shade is in direct proportion to the piece. Alien, mantis, fairy folk....wonderful interpretation by all!!!
LOL! @ stationeryfiend
Wow! That's awesome. It looks like it might walk over to you. Creepy and cool
I think it's fun. And it's a great jumping off point for other unusual lamp bases. Good job!
AAAAHHHHHH does anyone watch Falling Skies?? It looks just like one of the "skidders"/aliens!
