As much as we've tried to thin down the magazines that come into the home, there will still be a few publications we truly like to have in hand and will continue keeping. We suspect that your house is similar, so instead of stocking your bookcases full of back issues, try putting them to use instead — as seating!
NJUStudio has released their new Magazine Stool and it's retailing for $150USD. We're guessing that creative minds might be able to duplicate the look with less cost, but either way, retail or diy, it's quite pleasing to the eye.
The spines of magazines are always fun to look at and provide a bit of unexpectedness, plus in this case, they double as seating while still allowing you easy access to them when you want to flip back through an issue. Although it doesn't exactly look like the spot to spend 4 days reading all the Harry Potter books from beginning to end before the last movie comes out — it's still a fun idea for having a small place for a guest to land at a party.
What do you think of the look? Should the magazines have stayed on the shelf? Let us know below!

Shaw's Original Fir...
I am totally stealing/adapting that idea! Martha Steward magazine subscription renewal, here I come!
That's Stewart with a T, not Steward with a D, cuz Steward with a D goes duh.
It's genius. I love it.
lol, soooooo not for me
Awesome idea!
brilliant! i have so many Real Simple magazines dating back to 2008. i don't have the heart to throw them away and now i know what to do with 'em!
chelsealynla.blogspot.com
i would not do this to magazines i want to read again. too much shifting back and forth will tear all the covers off.
someone pin this. please.
I do a similar thing using them as endtables. Great idea.
Haha, genius!
has anyone actually tried this? i am not sure it is comfortable, or stable....wondering if it works! (because i would completely do it if it does!)
it's alright but have you ever tried to sit on a stack of magazines? it's not very stable......
This seems ridiculous to me. I actually laughed when I saw the picture.
Who is really going to pay $150 for this? The design is too stupid for words.
While I do doubt its practicality, I still love it!
It might look great with National Geographic magazines.
I'm all for the idea, and I don't mean to be cheap, but $150 is a LOT to ask for some leather belts and a plywood base.
Stability would definitely be a serious concern, and I think this requires cool, vintage magazines in order to look nice -- the mags I have lying around all have boring white spines. I'm a writer, though, so I have stacks of mags everywhere. I like to use them to create levels on my desk/dresser/bookshelves.
This is exactly what I've been waiting for - now I know what to do with my collection of Vogues from around the world.
I did this in college and I thought I was really clever. Doh! I should have marketed the idea then.
And yes, for the DIY, they're mostly stable if you can get the belts tight enough.
this is great, gave me an idea for the 15 years of Esquire magazines I have.
I am from India and we consider books sacred. This would be considered disrespecting the books/knowledge.
Just thought people who are going to try this, should know that.
And again ... Genius !
@fenrir We are in America and here we consider this genius. Oy !
Brilliant!
Fenrir,
To me ,this is considered going green! :)
"Here we consider this genius"?
Sorry, but not all of us -- some of us consider this just another example of the old saying, "There's a sucker born every minute."
I wouldn't sit on this but I now have an idea for a night stand in my spare bedroom, without the pillowtop, you know.
Also, I will be making this myself for probably $15.
Totally awesome. I don't believe in stockpiling magazines anymore (way too heavy in a motorhome), but if I had a fixed house I could totally go for this!
@ fenrir, periodicals aren't exactly books, are they? I wouldn't start a shrine for "5 flat belly secrets that work" anytime soon.
Also, I agree that arbitrary pricing is laughable. Maybe they forgot to move a decible...? Not for my house but one of those super eclectic urban-outfitters looking homes, this would look great. Maybe see more use as an ottoman
I think it's cool! But I like the ottoman idea from the previous poster rather than a stool...It definitely doesn't look all that comfortable and I'm sure the covers would rip.
I might give it a try, as an ottoman!
Oh, come on. This is just silly!
I'm not trying to cause a stir, simply mentioning the culture. I am not saying you should follow it too - just that you should be aware of other cultures, especially if you might have Indian friends coming over. You'll almost never see Indians touch their feet to any books (including periodicals).
Again I am not saying whether this is right or wrong. Simply spreading cultural awareness. =)
I have soooo many magazines I cannot part with and this looks like a fun solution to the amount of magazine clutter I have. I wouldn't pay $150 for it but I will be showing the image to my dad who has carpentry skills I lack.
