We have a serious soft spot for bulky filing cabinets. They can be used to hold all sorts of items, but they always feel a little too industrial in a home space unless extra thought is given to their presentation. We love this simple makeover that has big results for very little budget!
Filing cabinets are a dime a dozen at auctions and thrift stores. There's always one for the taking, but unless you want them to end up looking like college with stickers plastered all over them, your options are rather limited.
Gabrielle Blair (aka Design Mom) pointed us in the direction of Jackie Sarager who was the mastermind behind this super star transformation. She started off by removing the drawers and giving everything 2 coats of primer, followed by 2 coats of paint. The drawer fronts were covered with a stick on vinyl and everything was reassembled and things look awesome.
Even if you don't have need to hold this many papers in your home, try using it to hold sweaters, bulky winter clothes or if you have small enough feet, add dividers and store your shoes ends up! You can read the full tutorial over at Cafe Mom.

i love it! my filing cabinets at home are the biggest eyesores in an otherwise lovely space. this is a much better way to get the style and color i want. can't wait to try it!
I love this idea and have wanted to try it for a long time. I would like to know where to buy stylish contact paper large enough to cover the whole drawer. matching up the pattern doesn't sound fun to me. I'm also looking for some to re-do my children's ikea play table.

If you use the BLOX size, instead of the stripe it should cover your drawer. (The link is in the original post.)
Just make sure that you can get all the hardware off your drawer first. When I did mine I couldn't get the lock (next to the handle) off, so the stripe made it much easier to work around it. It measured to fit perfectly where the lock was. It would be really hard to cut a piece out for it right in the middle of your BLOX.
Does that make sense?
