Usually when you think of bunkbeds, they're in your children's room and typically there are only children sleeping in them. But when space was in short supply, this single Mom got creative and make a king-size bunk bed, fit for the whole family!
Although we're hoping (and assuming) that this structure had further support added to it to hold a larger and heavier mattress, we're actually kind of digging this idea!
When space is limited you have to get creative and come up with an unorthodox solution. This bed system holds not only two beds, but a bookshelf, toy storage and makes a cool cave for her little one. Check out more details on this Ikea hack over at the aptly named Ikea Hacker.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Oh, I just wanted to say that as a fellow single mom, this made me smile. It's nice, for one thing, to see a single mom's home on here. Also, I think this exemplifies the fact that with differing family structures, we sometimes have differing ways of living in our homes.
Great idea!
I love that wallpaper. :)
Wow! I wish I had seen this a couple of months ago! I live in a one bedroom, 440 sq.ft. apartment with my fiance, two and a half year old son and our dog! We have a very similar set up with an Ikea TROMSO loft bed for my fiance and I and my son's bed (the HENSVIK crib, converted to a toddler bed) and a little play area underneath including a play kitchen, toy bench and bookshelf! When I tell people about our set up, they think I'm crazy but it's worked out fantastic for us and leaves us with lots of room! And yes, ours is reinforced! I'm so glad I went with this idea instead of converting our closet.
I totally agree that different people live different ways and am all about making the best of whatever your situation but I just couldn't live with my husband above our daughter... She's got one herself (to make room for babe #2's crib :) ) and I can tell you from experience that every time she shifts, turns over, what have you, we can hear the creaking across the house. So, on a practical level how would you EVER have "grown up time" *wink wink* without traumatisizing the poor kid?! loL! I'm sure a lot of people might not be bothered by it, but as a mom to a very inquisitive five year old, I wouldn't want to keep answering questions! :)
My husband and I co-slept with our boys when they were little. All of our "adult time" took place in other places in the apartment instead of the bedroom. It actually made things a little more spicy - like we were being naughty. :)
Thank you all of you, I'm so happy you like the bed!
The matress is supported by the bookcases, and I actually added a bookcases in each end for additional support. Sp the bedframe doesn't really hold any weight.
About the "grown up time" it's not really an issue, as I'm a single mom - but if it ever come to be, I'm sure my couch would do just fine ;)
