I have to wonder what the ROI is on items like these. Especially with something as historical as Obama being our first black president. Personally, the visual clutter would be too much for me!

I don't think most people are concerned about ROI with their collections. They just collect items that, in some way, inspire them or give them a positive vibe in one way or another. I have several small collections and they're not worth anything to anyone but me, but I'm okay with that.

I agree the visual clutter is a bit much, though. For some reason I have an aversion to cluttering up my fridge with magnets. My mom always had so many on her fridge and I loved looking at them, but I only have simple, round neodymium magnets on my stainless steel fridge so they all blend in...except one Obama magnet I found in Vegas that I couldn't resist because of its hillarity. :)

I just saw the rest of her house and the cluttered fridge is definitely forgiveable!

I like the button idea. But what is the cure for Obama overexposure? Enough already.

Agreed with aj, I live in NYC, I am way overexposed to Obama gear and I find most of them a bit tacky.

My favourite political button says: Will Rogers Never Met Pat Buchanan. It might be the most brilliant button ever.

But I like the idea of making them into magnets. I might do that with my collection since it is signigicantly smaller and would not look as dense.

Enough with the knee-jerk Obama hate. This isn't really about Obama, it's about repurposing those pins in order to display them in a different way. I've also seen costume jewelry pins turned into magnets too.

Weariness of the never-ending "Obama fan frenzy" is not the same as "knee-jerk Obama hate".

My final word on this subject...Obama kitsch is not so much design as political propaganda and ephemera. As such, it really has no place on this website. Any testy political conversations that are started as a result are simply the "fault" of the Apartment Therapy editors, who decide what gets posted. Apartment Therapy should be a "safe zone" from politics but since it is not, it should come as no surprise if partisan observations or discussions result from political postings.

AT editors should step up and exercise editorial discretion when politics and race get ugly here.

I love Marion McDowell's home. (the political buttons ain't set in concrete for cripes sake) It is wonderfully, tastefully African-centric. I really like the back-splash with the masks. They look like they would appear 3-D when lit with candle light. The whole space is splendid and the jeweled decorative box by her Mother is a clever way to use costume jewelry.
