Our friend Michelle recently shared her $30 standing desk project, an IKEA Norbo wall table painted matte black to match her dramatic wallpaper. Across the pond in Sweden, Niklas Johansson had a similar idea, turning to IKEA for his standing desk solution, his stark white desk the opposite of Michelle's noir setup...
"I needed to improve my living room work place so I made a standing desk out of an IKEA kitchen bench that I cut to the right size. The problem was that I needed room for four of my external hard drives and I did not want them to take any space on the desk and there weren't much other space I could use. I did, however, have some space beneath the standing desk so I decided to hang them on the back of another IKEA board under the desk. It turned out just the way I wanted."

Why four external hard drives? Wouldnt be easier to just have one larger one?
I have 4 drives ranting from 1-3 TB under my desk. It would be awfully expensive to replace a giant older drive simply because it has less space than a newer one.
I have 3 external and 6 internal drives hooked up to my box since when I bought the drives, the large sizes weren't invented yet. Since the hard drives themselves are still solid, working, drives, why waste it?
I've got everything from 80GB drives all the way to 2TB drives. I organize my drives for separate items - one is exclusively for music, one for videos, etc.
I love her idea of strapping everything together.
I cleaned off a shelf on my Ivar bookcase and put my MacBook Pro on it, at perfect height for me to use standing up. The easiest "standing desk" available to me.
Where did you get the lamp from? My workspace needs one!
Great idea! Unfortunately I still use pc with a tower which still is problematic to integrate in my living room. As well as printer and scanner which I always use. Where do you put these?
Where can i find those rubber straps and knobs that are in the picture??? I spent over an hour with google and can't find a match. I see they have a little t-handle on the end, which presumably goes into a link when they are wrapped around something.
I am interested in anything in a hookless rubber tie-down. (I work with networknig small electronic devices and it would be useful to "tie down" my test jigs while I work on them).
Another alternative is to put everything on a "Velcro Board"
Anyone have information on the plastic straps used to attach drives to the board?
Nice project, but can you post the name of the desk lamp? I've been hunting for a nice lamp for my office. Most of them are garbage but I really dig that one. Thanks.
Great idea for concealing your hard drives and hiding the jumble of wires that go with them
The straps, rubber tiensioners, and the fastening knobs are used to fasten tarp on trucks, guess you can buy them at a good hardware store.
