People have been hearing that SLS and parabens are bad news, and many have been curious about switching some of their personal care products for their non-toxic equivalents. Here are four shampoos to take the work out of hunting down SLS and paraben free shampoos. Read more for the full details.
Sodium lauryl sulfate is an extremely skin-irritating ingredient found in many personal care and household cleaning products like toothpaste, shampoo, face wash, body wash, liquid hand soap, cosmetics and detergents.
Parabens are chemical compounds widely used by the personal care industry as preservatives. They are controversial because of their endocrine disrupting qualities.
All four of these great shampoos are SLS and paraben free. They can be purchased online or at local stores.
SLS and Paraben Free Shampoo Line-Up:
1. Photo of all four products.
2. Kiss My Face - Whenever Shampoo with Organic Botanicals. $7.99
3. Yes to Carrots - Nourishing Shampoo. $8.99
4. Aubrey Organics - GPB Glycogen Protein Balancing Shampoo. $10.48
5. Burt's Bees - Super Shiny Grapefruit & Sugar Beet Shampoo. $8.00
As a side note, if you want to go even greener, abandon the plastic bottle all together and try a shampoo bar.

Liggetts bar shampoo!!
Tried the Burt's Bees Shampoo bar, left my hair really matte and horrible feeling and it got worse the more shampoos I went through. so disappointed as I had heard good things from others...:-(
I'm with bagelpower - I've only had bad luck with natural shampoos - they don't make my hair feel as good as chemically enhanced soaps. Anyone else had better luck?
Giovanni Smooth as Silk shampoo + conditioner are my favourite. added benefit? the formulation is so good- i don't use any product after during styling. none.
@bagelpower & @franklindean -
Switching to greener shampoos usually involves some adjustment time for your scalp, sometimes even up to a month. Your scalp is used to over-producing oils after the shampoo strips them out, so it needs to learn it doesn't have to do that anymore.
Brushing your hair with a natural-bristle brush such as boar hair or wood helps distribute the oil throughout your hair to help transition.
Also, I've found that it's difficult to use natural products if your city has hard water. Seems like the extra chemicals are necessary to cut through the hardness.
I alternate between Kiss My Face's Miss Treated and Pureology's hydrate series (they are also sulfate-free, vegan, and organic). They get my hair plenty clean -- and I use a lot of product, so I do require some oomph. My hair's processed, but it's silky, shiny, and healthy with these shampoos. My stylist tried to convince me to try their new line, but I'm sticking with what works!
I used Yes to Carrots for a while and loved it. I switched to baking soda/vinegar and find I like that even more.
I really like Trader Joe's Nourish Spa shampoo; the ingredients are overwhelmingly organically derived herbs; no SLS or parabens. 16 oz. is just under $3.00, and it makes my hair nice enough for me to have made the switch from the far more expensive Kiehl's line.
As someone cursed with fine, thin hair, I've been very happy with Burt's Bees pomegranate volumizing shampoo. It does feel a bit different sudsing up at first, but your scalp adjusts, and you'll get volume galore.
I love Kiss My Face's Big Body line. It did take a week or so for me to get figure what amounts and best methods for my hair. After some adjustments, my hair has never been healthier and my scalp is much happier.
I also would like to try the Trader Joe's that RMF325 mentions above.
My wife and I both have fine / temperamental hair, we tried Burt's as we use a lot of their other products. It was mediocre at best. We have had great results using Kevin Murphy from Australia. We live in Canada and get it from our salon. The packaging is bio-degradable as well.
I've had really good luck with Aubrey's. Have tried the cheaper organic ones at Rite Aid and Burt's with mixed luck. The sulfates in conventional shampoo dry my hair out like straw.
I love the Giovanni 50:50 Hydrating-Clarifying Shampoo. I have thin hair and it gives it good volume. I like their volumizer and spray in conditioner too.
i like john masters organics + hamadi products.
both shampoos + conditioners take some time to get used to as they don't lather as much as brands w/ sls + the conditioners often don't feel as slippery or smoothing.
Dr. Bronner's + conditioner is a great combination.
I have been through hell and back trying to find decent shampoo and conditioner that isn't full of evil. Natural shampoos like to leave my hair feeling like I just woke up in a landfill, even after laboring through and using it for a month or more. I started using Tval's solid shampoo and conditioner and I will never ever go back. It smells incredible and it leaves your hair feeling clean - not overly shiny and slick from the chemicals - but clean. Perfection.

I second @pepsin's comment about Giovanni Smooth as Silk shampoo. This shampoo is so great that I've actually been able to give up conditioner!
i love toadstool soaps shampoo and leave-in conditioner. they make my hair super soft and they are handmade. oh, and they smell soooo good.

Love Aubrey organics! Always get compliments on my hair, too. Environmental working group is an awesome resource for finding safe beauty care products. http://www.ewg.org
Giovanni is really good. I also love their leave in conditioner because my skin breaks out from the heavier ones.
I've also tried the Berts Bees shampoo and while I generally love their products it made my hair feel heavy and flat (I have naturally fine hair).
That said I am in love with Trader Joes Tea Tree Shampoo! Make sure not to accidently get Trader Joes Refresh shampoo because it has parabens in it (or SLS) I can't remember but it had one of them in it.
I did visit Whole Foods today looking for a SLS and Paraben Free Shampoo (as I have noticed a decrease in the health of my hair and I am trying to change my lifestyle to natural products as possible). I took a look at the Kiss My Face, Aubrey, and Burts Bees, but ultimately went with another SLS and Paraben Free brand I found there called Avalon Organics. I got the Nourishing Lavender Shampoo and the Strengthening Peppermint Conditioner. Also I am going to try to reduce my washings to 3 times a week (hard to go lower when I work with animals and get rather dirty). I will see how it goes and report back after using. If anyone else has tried this brand please let me know how you liked (or disliked) it.
