Free Neighborhood Produce: FallenFruit.org

One would assume the bounty above was purchased from the local farmer's market. But everything shown was actually harvested by my girlfriend and our friend Saelee in the surrounding streets of Silver Lake this weekend, including carob, lavender, passion fruit, apples and oranges...

FallenFruit.org is a site that provides neighborhood maps of Silver Lake, Echo Park, Sante Fe, Hancock Park and MidWilshire, plotting out all the locations of publicly available produce hanging over onto sidewalks for legal harvest (we do recommend if you do see an owner, to politely ask...they might even let you nab a few more fruits on their side of the fence).

And if you're so inclined, you can make your own fruit map to share following these steps. We've already found a huge mulberry tree ripe with sweet berries and are keeping our eyes out for ripening figs and other stone fruit (with hopes for avocado in the near future). Sure makes the morning and evening jog an even healthier endevour to stick to!
