Name: Fritz, Susan and Ava
Location: South End, Boston, Massachusetts
When we renovated our house, the main challenge was creating a modern, open, flexible live/work space within the constraints of the original 1850 rowhouse. Each floor is just over 400 square feet, and gets more private as you go up.
The first floor is office space for my graphic design firm Visual Dialogue and my partner Susan Battista's market research firm Topic 101. Above that is an open kitchen/dining/living space on the 2nd floor. Our 9 year-old daughter Ava Detroit's bedroom is on the 3rd floor, along with a small tv room which can be converted to a guest room. And the top floor is the master bedroom and bathroom with tree top views of Boston.
Thanks, Fritz !

I love how the stairs let light through and make the space seem more airy and open; but stairs like that always make me feel a little dizzy when climbing them. Like at the mac store. I grip the railing for dear life. Oh well. I think I'm design-stair disabled.

Love how bright and airy it is! And the outside of the building is amazing!
Full tour, please!
LOVE the openness. Where are those white frames from with the photo collage, great idea.
Please tell me about that bookshelf in photo #3. Custom built-in, or from a store?
Info on frames please :)
What a gorgeous home! I really love the openness of the stairs and the very neutral palate.
Too minimalist for me, but I do love the stairs and the lighting in the kitchen!
More more more! I want to see more. :) Love the stairs, but even more the wall treatment in the stairwell. Wallpaper??
What brand/model is your fridge? It looks so sleek.
FULL TOUR! FULL TOUR! FULL TOUR!
I love the kitchen cabinets and the amount of storage, but think it's almost too bare. I would love to see the rest of the house... let's get a full tour AT!
I'd also like to see a full tour!
:clap clap clap: house tour!
Did you leave any elements of the lovely historic home intact? It's beautiful, but looks from these pics totally unrelated to how a South End house would originally have been built.
Wasn't this house in Dwell a few years ago?
Um, gorgeous. Full tour!
Also, I don't get why people are talking about original finishes. I live in a 100+ year old house and when we moved in the only "original" item was the flooring. Even that is probably only just old and it's in *horrible* shape (totally unsalvageable). You never know what condition the "original" things are in, or if someone before you already ripped everything up.
I say go for whatever works!
Amazing. More please.
I *NEED* TO SEE MORE.
Beautiful space....More please!!!!!
Love the stairs!
Lovely, refreshingly spare, and wonderfully compliments the architecture. I will add to the chorus of More, Please!
@threeacres - The house is beautiful, and it may be true that the interior was decimated - the South End used to be a ghetto, and a lot of the housing stock took a hit, for sure. But there are only so many of these houses in the world, and where possible, many home enthusiasts hope we can retain at least some architectural details as people renovate - these houses were built a time when there was still old-growth lumbar and hand-crafted construction, and it is certainly much greener to preserve that beautiful craftsmanship than rip it out and start over.
I don't think its the exact same one but this fridge looks very similar to the one I've ordered from Lowe's. Sam Sung RF217ABWP. But mine's a little smaller than most french door models (~32 inches wide) as I have a smaller space.
I love this! I used to live in the South End in a rowhouse that had not been remodeled in years. We had exposed wiring, original wallpaper in the bathroom and lots of other "originals". It is still my most memorable apartment.
I want to know more about the photo collage too! And a full tour would be great.
I like the photo collage wall. I like the way light comes all the way throught the place.
The kitchen is lovely, but the uber-clean look made me wonder when you were going to move in.
yep, frames info please.
checking back for photo frame info...
Bueller.......Bueller......???
Beautiful home.
Is the child really named "Detroit"?
Nicely done.
I also love the frame collage, however I am on a tight student budget. I just did a google search and found a dollar store supplier that will let me buy 40 white wooden 5x7 frames at on 69 cents each! I need to buy them in bulk to do this project anyway...
