Back in April, Deena wrote in asking the Apartment Therapy readers to give advice on the fireplace in her new home. Yesterday, she sent in photos of her newly made over fireplace - take a peek at the new look:

The living room got a fresh coat of light colored paint and the fireplace is clad in a Carrara marble mosaic, framed in wood. The refacing totally changed the look - its gone from rustic to sleek and chic.
Thanks for the follow up photos and congrats on the job well done, Deena!

Great job with the fireplace!
Now a word of advice:
Spin the sectional 90 degrees to the right so it's facing the wall, put the chair in the corner under the window and mount the TV on the wall or place it on a credenza/shelf
Love it! Well done!
looks great. I agree about moving the furniture as bepsf recommended. And wow you have some really nice walls for art now. Good job.
Wow! That's really gorgeous!
bepsf's suggestion would look great.
Deena, if your current arrangement is dictated by the opening in the patio slider door, check into the possibility of changing which half opens. It seems to depend on what kind of track the door slides on. In some cases, it's a fairly simple task.
In fact, after looking up instructions, I might attempt it myself!
If I accomplish this, I'll post again with my results.
When Deena originally submitted her request for help back in April an overwhelming number of commenters told her to leave the fireplace alone. I'm glad you didn't listen to them. The old fireplace was dated and this looks so much better.
Wow! That tile is beautiful!
It looks amazing! I would love to know how they did it since my own fireplace is kind of craptastic thanks to previous owners "fixing it up" and doing a really bad job.
Thanks everyone!
The tv is being mounted on the wall in a few days (we're still in transition here). It's going above the fireplace--much as I tried to resist this placement. I don't think I can move the sectional and seating arrangement as suggested because the dining furniture is adjacent along the same wall ("below" the furniture in the photo). I placed the sectional where it is to great some sense of division between the two spaces. But you've given me something to think about in the future!
This is actually my husband's place--we live in separate cities, and (because of the expense of having two places) it was all done on a very tight budget.
Thanks again for being such a great community.
beautiful job! You had a vision and made it work perfectly, despite overwhelming advice to the contrary ;)
Wow, that's awesome.
I could never have done something that cool because I would have obsessively wondered whether the fish scales should point "up" or "down" and my inability to decide would have left me with that brick fireplace forever.
I'm now thinking of stealing those fish scales for my bathroom shower. They are SO cool.
Where did you get the tile on the surround?
I purchased the fish scales from an online retailer, Oracle Tile. They are $14 / ft. I looked long and hard to find an equivalent for less money, but I couldn't. In the end, it's only about 15 square feet anyway. At night, they have a shine that reflects the light. A little too much bling for my partner, but I'm trying to embrace the showiness!
That is SOOO cool! Are they on sheets or did you have to put in each tile individually? I wish we could get a close up -- it looks FANTASTIC! Kudos!
elw, they come on the 12" X 12" sheet.
The tiler affixed them on a backboard first, and then mounted the backboard onto the existing fireplace.
Stunning! Congrats on a job well done!
I just tried to do a search for the tiles and am finding Oracle Tile and Stone, but they don't seem to have this in their gallery. Am I in the right place? I LOVE the tile.
(Reluctant to promote), but Tianinspace, here's their ebay store: http://stores.ebay.com/oraclestone
And here's their online store: http://www.mosaictilewholesaler.com/
I can't see the fan tiles listed there anymore, but you contact them to see if they still have that particular tile.
Wow! pretty sure I commented on the original post and said you shouldn't change the brick - but I absolutely love the end result!
The fan/scale tiles are so flippin' cool.
I made an error in posting the tile company's website above (I gave the wrong one); their online site is http://www.oraclestone.com/
Sorry!
Lovely, chic outcome! This is why I dig AT - ideas that provide inspiration for my "someday"!
nice work! the floors look great too.
First- this is so elegant and chic! Job gorgeously executed. It's my favorite fireplace I have seen on AT. I was wondering if you could tell me more about the stone on the bottom and around the opening. Where did you get those pieces? I am currently replacing the cracked tile on mine and would like to do something similar, but I am not sure where to start. Thanks!
Thanks, RosieDaisy--what a great compliment. The stone at the bottom is Caesarstone. I was hoping for a grey limestone, but the stone contractor had some leftover Caesarstone, and it actually looked convincing. The stone on the inside is Carrara marble.
don't mount the tv over the fireplace. Terrible viewing and it will overwhelm your new mantlepiece which is meant to be the focal point of the room...
That is gorgeous! I love the dragon scale pattern.
