OK, so maybe this is a little gimmicky, but these days we're big fans of home accessories that make us smile. Anything that reminds us of middle school science fairs definitely fits into that category.
While we definitely can see some problems involving maintaining a supply of fruit to power this sucker, we like the fact that by changing the fruit in question you can change the entire clock - and keep your house guests on their toes.
Fruit Powered Clock available for $18 from Urban Outfitters.

Sprout Side Table
MAYBE a little gimmicky?
just because you can, doesn't mean you should.
people are starving. people have just lost jobs and an apple is regarded with more value than before the financial crisis hit in September. and, of course, people place value on apples just because. sure, i may sound humorless but this object has really hit me negatively at my core (pun intended).
Does it come in a wristwatch?
And heather leaf, you do not sound humorless. Well at least not because of *this* post!
Oh hell no you did not just waste a perfectly good apple
More a science-museum-souvenir-shop gadget for kids fascinated by science.
The kind of thing you get fed up with quickly.
Maybe if you try it with a watermelon.
I'd rather make Apple Pie...
...and use my Citizen Eco-Drive wristwatch (solar powered/no batteries) to check the time.
I can't even imagine wasting that much good fruit. (In any economical climate.) Unless you just keep it plugged in to whatever piece of fruit youare going to eat that day and change it daily?
I wonder what I would do with this during The Cure?
I could see its relevance on a camping trip.
Marie--you know perfectly well what you would do with it. And so would anyone with any sense.
I like to smile, but this isn't all that amusing.
A visitor from Japan brought this as a gift for my son appr. 20 years ago.
The poor child had to bear how his father and our visitor were discussing the function over and over.
The clock was used a few fruits and then the contacts were completely oxydized.
