Have you ever thought about the street you live on? Not the homes or the pretty curbside appeal but the name of your street. We grew up right outside Washington, D.C. and moved to Los Angeles in high school. We moved from a nondescript street name to Elm Drive. (While it wasn't Elm Street, it was close enough.)
We have friends who live on Wolverine Court even though they are alumni of University of Illinois and the Michigan Wolverines are school rivals. (Apparently their neighbors went to Michigan and found a house on that court because of the name.) We also know people that live on Shooting Star Circle who love their street name, Stoner Street who laugh at their street name, Sweet Lane who smile at their street name and Melrose Place, to name a few. We wanted to ask you, Apartment Therapy, about your own street name and how you feel about it when you turn the corner in your neighborhood to go home? Share your story with us below.

I am ambivalent about the name of the street where I live. It is an American Indian place name for a river and was apparently also a name for several American Indian towns in North Carolina and Tennessee prior to colonization. I am ambivalent about the name because many street names are given to represent that which the residential houses displaced (e.g. "Oak Street" was where oak trees used to be).
I used to live on Braeburn Dr. in Atlanta, and loved it because Braeburn's are my favorite apple - next to Honey Crisp, but I don't see that becoming a street name anytime soon...
This reminds me of a Gilmore Girl episode when they change her inns street name to Sores and Boils Alley.
Luckily I have had good street names for the most part.
I currently live on Arbutus Street, and in an area of Vancouver where all the streets have tree names. The only thing interesting about Arbutus is the fact that it seems to be a uniquely westcoat tree, and I know I'm on the phone with someone out of town when they confirm my address as "Ar-butt-us".
A year after moving to a beach town where I lived on a street called Barefoot (no joke), I got a job selling shoes. I still find it funny. (I always knew I wasn't dealing with a Californian when they assumed it was spelled 'Bear Foot.')
Now I'm on a numbered street, which makes me feel like I live in the big city. Which is fine, since I do!
I used to live in an area where all the streets are named after lakes. Across the street, my buddy's area have names after birds....
Ten years ago we bought our first place on Summerland Rd in a lake community. When I saw the name of the road for the first time I actually said out loud "what a happy sounding place!" So it was only fitting that when I started my furniture and home decor company from my garage five years ago I named it -- Summerland Style.
I live on One World Drive, my friend lives on Prada Court, and another on Spotted Pony Trail.
emmaduck: I used to live on 4th and MacDonald! I also got the "Ar-butt-us" when I was there!
when i found my current apt, part of what sold me on it was the street name... Morningside.
summerland - love your story!
For the first 1/2 of my life, I lived on number streets (3rd Street, 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue) and many of my family still lives at that location and/or on other numbered streets. When I was in a position to choose my own housing, I stayed as far away from numbered streets as possible: Columbia, Echo Park Avenue, Mariposa...). What really has been interesting has been analyzing the address number or the apartment numbers that I've had: 307 is a number that I have been in sync with since college and it seems to follow me whereever I go.
My parents used to live on Sweet Spice Street and it always made me gag. Now, I live on Byrd Park Ct and it really is a courtyard and I love it!
My grammer is off... apologies.
echoparkgalla - I've had the same experience with 527 which was my freshman year dorm room #. I have been in sync with that number ever since.
I currently live on Jasper Avenue, which I don't think has any special significance except that we're three hours away from the mountain town of the same name. I would give my left leg to live on Spotted Pony Trail.
Haha-- I used to live in Arbutus, Maryland and got the same thing-- arrr butt us.
I love my street name! It's Priscilla Lane. The neighborhood has a very 50's feel in terms of architecture, so the quaint name fits perfectly!
I grew up on Mary Street ... and my mother's name was Mary.
At one point I lived on a street that was the same as my last name. It was even the same spelling, which was not the usual. I had the mail carrier knock on the door when I first moved in to see if there was some kind of mistake. Such fun.
Wow.
I've been following AT for a couple of years now, but have never posted until now. Hello everyone!
I thought this was an interesting topic, and started thinking about streets I've lived on throughout my life.
For some reason that photo seemed so familiar. . .like I've been there before. Sure enough, that's the city where I grew up.
My family still lives in said city, and I loved our street name so much that I named my company after it - Rebellion Road.
Whenever I have lived in a big city it's usually been on a numbered street.
But my favorite street name by far I saw was when I was skiing in N.C. It was called Most Excellent Way!
Hey, I used to live on Elm Drive in LA too! Now I love in DTLA, where I love the street names - Flower, Hope, Grand.
LIVE in DTLA, that is. But love in it too, I guess.
I live on New Territory Blvd. and I absolutely love it.
I've lived on tree streets
Palmetto, Pine, Cherry, and Oakland.
Raymond Chandler wrote about detective Philip Marlowe living at the Hobart Arms on Franklin Avenue near Kenmore Avenue in Los Angeles - I live 1/2 block from that intersection! No Hobart Arms though.. by the way.. does anybody know why those used to call apartment buildings 'arms'?
I know someone who lives on "Snow White Drive" and I'm completely envious of her street name :)
Growing up I lived on Willow Valley Rd. The freeway exit was "Urine", but pronounced differently. What a horrible name regardless.
When I first moved away, I live on Diamond Vista. I love the name of that street, but all the street names were named in a mining theme in that area. My next two places were Sky Vista and Sky Valley. I liked Sky Vista better, but both were pretty cool names.
I must have gotten back into the tree groove though, I live on Sycamore Way now. I'm kind of ambivalent about that name... It's plain, but my neighborhood isn't that exciting either.
I had an elementary school teacher that lived on Frolic Lane, which made me like her even more.
I grew up on Whispering Lane and the backyard backed into protected woods. I associated the 'whispering' with magical creatures hiding in the woods - elves, faeries, talking mice and chipmunks. I no longer live there but in my mind it remains as it was when I was 8.
20 minutes late - ooh la la - Most Excellent Way! Love that too!! Of course I love Zzyzx Street (on the 15 to Vegas) but not sure if anyone lives there.
I grew up on Upas (pron. "yoo-pus" not "oo-pus") in the part of my city where (almost) all the streets were named after trees (unless they couldn't think of a tree that started with that letter, like X). A upas is a poisonous Javanese shrub -- not sure if that counts as a tree. Anyway, the city's alphabet streets -- from south to north -- covered women's names, city names, trees, flowers, and birds.
In college, I lived on San Antonio, Nueces and Salado (all rivers) as well as Avenue F. In New York, I lived on Claire Court. In L.A., I lived on Bundy, Glendale and Lucretia.
My last house was on Haney Drive, the only street not named after a college in the area of Austin called University Hills. Now I live on Stobaugh Street, which has a nice alliteration.
The mention of Spotted Pony Trail made me think of an area near my dogs' vet. I always pass a street called Dull Knife Drive -- it's right by Fast Horse Drive and Running Fox Trail. I kind of wish I lived on a street like that just for the stationery design possibilities.
I've lived on several different streets. Some names I've liked, some I haven't.
Growing up on Grant Road, I always thought it sounded rough and ugly, but now I'm rather fond of the sound.
I also lived on a Belaire Avenue for a while (as you might imagine, all of the guys that lived in my apartment building thought it was hilarious to dub themselves "the fresh prince of Belaire... Avenue.)
Thrush Alley was by far my favorite.
McKean Road, Park Avenue and my current address on Washington Street are all names I've been pretty indifferent to. They're alright, but nothing special to smile at.
i worry that the house i will want to buy will be on a dorky sounding street name! My choice streets would be "avocado ave" or "pachuco place".
20 minutes late - I actually snapped that photo in Charleston, SC when I was there for a wedding. My little nephew's name is Jacob so I took a pic for him.
When we moved, we looked at a house that was actually on "Lover's Lane." It was being sold by the owners. The reason they were selling? A divorce. No kidding.
I grew up in Miami, which has mostly numbered streets, with quadrants. But every time we went to the airport, we drove by Coral Gables and I always commented on one of the street names we passed, Alegriano Avenue. I always wanted to live on that street, just because of the name, not necessarily because of the houses.
We used to live on Elm Street!
When we decided we were ready to buy, we looked all over the place and weren't finding anything we wanted. When a listing came up on Francis Way, I wasn't sure about the looks of the place from the listing, but we went ahead and looked because my middle name is Frances (it's a long-running family tradition in our family to name the firstborn Francis/Frances).
It turned out to be exactly what we wanted! We now live on Francis Way.
i currently live on lily lake lane. gag. i think the street name is soo cheesy. i dont think you would ever guess i live in a chicago suburb
i grew up in a suburb of toronto on "boismere court" which we always pronounced "boys-mear" but everyone pronounced differently.
now i live in toronto on "royal york road".... it's a big street so it's fairly boring. even has a subway stop "royal york station"
it's a really nice area though, so :) woo.
RebeccaATLA - Jacob's Alley intersects with King St. I saw the pic and did a double take. . .or three until I figured it out. I lived nearly 20 years in Charleston. It's a beautiful place. I'm in NY now, but my family is in Charleston and I'm fortunate to be able to visit every 3 months or so. I'm sure I'll move back one day. Hopefully you had an enjoyable time there.
SGG - I'm from Miami originally and I think all of my houses were on numbered streets, terraces, courts, etc.
Abialek - Haha. Ha!!!
I named my cats by the street names we lived on, Diamond Street and Bosworth Avenue in SF. We got a girl and boy kittens - Diamond and Bosworth.. which became Di and Boz.
Currently living on Kenmore between Franklin and Finley. Guess I need to get three more cats and name them Ken, Franklin and Finley : )
20 minutes late - i absolutely loved Charleston! We were there over Memorial Day weekend and the weather was gorgeous! Such a pretty city, the food was great and the people were so sweet. We stayed at the Vendue Inn and enjoyed borrowing their bikes and riding through the city.
RebeccaATLA - It's such a European city. . .cafes (the food has become more progressive over the years), cycling, the history. And of course the people. Charleston is constantly voted most polite city in the US.
Let me know if you have any plans for a return visit. I'd be glad to make some suggestions of things to see and do.
I've always cared what my street name is. I like things to be copacetic and a street name is a big part of the package that is your home & lifestyle. I've always been annoyed that we've have numbered street names until about two years ago, but even though our current street has a 'real' name, it's ugly. I always imagine what someone's home is like based on their street names, but much like apartments, they're almost always beautifully-named to appeal to buyers regardless of what the homes are like.
I once lived on Dover St in Worcester MA, and again on Dover St in Somerville MA. From that point forward, I went looking for a Dover St wherever I moved, but I haven't lived on one since.
I live on East-West Highway. Very annoying. Imagine the confusion when telling it to people over the phone. Even the post office doesn't do it correctly: E. West Hwy is their default.
Nothing like the street I lived on the first 20-odd years of my life....Grace Street. loved it. The story is that the man who had the first house there had a daughter Grace
Street names make it or break it for me. We looked at a condo a few years back that was pretty decent. I just couldn't deal with the fact that it was on Penusquitas Rd. Say it out loud and then try NOT to laugh!
I love these stories! The first 26 years of my life I lived on Secluded Lane, I only heard jokes a few times. I remember a sweet, older lady I used to work with said how sexy it sounded.
Just glad I didn't live on Big Beaver Road (30 miles south of me at Exit 69), as a girl, I would just be sort-off embarrassed all the time.
I never pay much attention to the street that I live on. When I lived in Manhattan it was on Convent Ave., which no one has heard of and they would immediately ask me how to spell it so I got in the habit of saying "convent, like a nun." I still say that to this day even though I don't live there anymore.
Now I live on a number street, which isn't exciting at all, but will soon be moving back to a Mercer St -- a street I lived on previously, which isn't hard since there are so many streets with that name in the Northeast.
groupie - I love Mercer Street and all of Soho! I lived on Sullivan Street when I lived in NY and it's still my favorite street name, probably because of the great memories of living in the city and in my tiny studio at the time.
I live on a street that cuts off at the county line - so going in the direction where I live it's called Meridian St (which is confusing since there is another Meridian a block down) and the other side is called Country Walk. In my own mind, I like to pretend my street name is the latter since it always makes me smile.
Now I would love to own a house at the corner of these two streets now far from me -- Home Ave and Comfort Lane. I'm not making up the street names either - LOL - but I'd love to be able to give directions to my house if I lived there.
I live on Sword Dancer, which sounds so stupid. Recently I found out that all the names in my neighborhood are that of old racing horses, which made it much cooler. Now when people smirk at my street name I tell them this cool fact. Ha!
Well, the house I went to high school in, and where my parents still live, is on Black Locust Dr. (uh, gross.) It's in a subdivision that also has a Honey Locust, a Water Locust, and a Cedar Locust. Currently, I live on Gay Avenue, a name that always seems to make workers at places that need to get my address very uncomfortable. I can't lie, I've started to get enjoyment out of that :)
I grew up at 123 W. Inca St. Whenever people asked me for my address and I started with 123, they never believed me. I had to show a cop my license once when I was filling out an accident report. The rest of the streets in my neighborhood also had old tribal names: Aztec, Maya, etc.
My street name now isn't particularly interesting for me, but it is for my neighbor. he has a daughter named Logan. We live on Logan Ct.
My MIL lives on Angus Drive, which is a perfectly fine name, but you would not believe the amount of mail she gets that is addressed to Anus Drive!
I've lived mainly on numbered streets, though there was a road where I grew up named Goldfish Farm Road. Seriously? Who farms goldfishes? Or goldfish?
There is a street in my current neighborhood called Electric Avenue. I don't particularly like the location of the avenue, but, man, having an address on Electric Avenue would be a dream come true!
I've always lived on streets named after people, but now we've moved into our first own apartment as a married couple on Thought Street, which is kinda cool.
We've also lived on a street in Jerusalem named after the Galilean Mountains, which was awesome because we love those mountains and have special memories from there.
i have lived on:
liberty st
johnson st
broad st
california st (right when i moved to cal. too)
and most recently: hawthorne blvd
I lived in London briefly several years ago, with quite the sinister address:
13 Manson Place.
I was dating a guy who got quite a kick out of it when I'd answer the cab driver's question, "Where to?"
On another note, I once met someone who lived on Cash Mountain. Talk about awesome!
I live on Descanso. It translates out to "rest" or "break." It makes me think of naps. And I love naps.
I've spent four years on Lovejoy, in a neighborhood that is full of names including Flanders (the neighbor), Quimby (the mayor), Kearney (the bully)...you get the picture. We are proud to be the "Lovejoy lads" to some of our friends. I used to live on Uranus in another city. I've had some good street names in my experience.
The street names in my Gold Rush hometown are great. I always wanted to live on You Bet Road!
I live on Weather Top CT and love it. My whole community is Lord of the Rings themed and that makes living there all the better. I do however, wish we would have ended up on Middle Earth ST.
P.S. Weather Top is where Frodo was stabbed by the evil servants of Sauron
I live on a street called St. Nicholas Ave. which at this time of year always makes me smile to write on my Christmas cards and packages in the return address.
My good friend lived on Lennon Court in high school. I was always insanely jealous.
Her sister later moved out of that house to a new subdivision with streets given either awesome-sounding city names (Helsinki Cres., Osaka Circle, Zurich Ave.,), flower names (Periwinkle Cres., Lavender Ave.) and, of course, UNICORN DRIVE.
You just know the planner let his six-year-old daughter name a street.
Natomaton - There is a new town near us with a street called Quiddich Lane - it's that six-year old again!
My street names have always been pretty dull but I liked living on Riverside, it was easy and people knew how to find it!
I grew up on Green Acres Dr. I loved writing that address out, always made me smile. Now, it's just a typical NYC numbered street, not nearly as interesting!
My favorite street names I've lived on were Briarwood Dr., Grace St., and my current apartment on Las Palmas Ave.
Residents of West Hollywood are in a tizzy over "Dicks Street". No lie.
Here in Las Vegas my cousins live in an area that is named after Star Wars characters and ships. I WISH I lived in those neighborhoods so badly, if I liked the part of town better i would have considered buying there just for that purpose.
Instead I am stuck on Free Spirit - not so much of a fan.
My street's name is Mason Dr. Every time I come up on it, ready to turn, I can't help but hear Ellen Muth's line from Dead Like Me: "Ah, Mason... Mason, Mason, Mason..." (there is a character named Mason whom the main character had a bit of a crush on from time to time). That's pretty much how happy I am to be home.
Like another poster, my husband and I named our cats after a street we lived on in college: Margaret Morrison Street. The cats go by Maggie and Moe for short. Future pets will have such names as JFK, Dennis, Pepper Tree, California, Kentucky, Gettysburg, and Greenfield (we've moved a lot - and these are only the places we lived TOGETHER). We don't expect to use all of these and, really, JFK and Dennis are the only suitable pet names in the bunch. I chuckle when I think of a pet named JFK...
I currently live on Thomas St, the cross street is Melrose St and it was the sight of a near death accident last Dec when 2 tour buses went slidding down Thomas St and nearly went over the retaining wall onto the freeway several hundred feet below and thankfully I was at work at it occured right out in front of my building.
Other places i've lived on are Roy St, 4th Ave, Summit Ave and grew up on 69th Ave in a middle class suburban community.
I currently live on Castle Way. Love my street name! Even though the place I share with my boyfriend and our two dogs is only 850sq.ft. I consider it our little castle.
I grew up in the country on a road named "Town Line"...pretty distinctive, hehehe. Later they changed it to "Winston Churchill Boulevard"....Very grand but highly misleading as it was barely more than dirt at the time!
I also lived in apt 1401, 666 Ontario Street (I was a starving student at the time). It really never occurred to me that since there was no "13th floor" that I was on it, until a delivery man refused to come up because of the address!
I now live on Temperance Street, which some friends find quite amusing! LOL
When I was looking for houses I actually found myself overlooking homes located on streets I didnt like the name of....
What is a bit weird are all the actual addresses I've had; 3333, 9, 666, then 33 and now 99! There were others in between, but I just find this odd. It isn't something I look for, just a co-inky-dink!
I live on Gordon Street.
I grew up on Palmetto Avenue. Our dog was Lady, so my stripper name would have been Lady Palmetto.
I have lived on Charles Allen.
121 Englewood Road was my favorite address.
Now I have a number address, which I could do without.
I don't care much about street name, however the last two I've lived on have been ones I have to spell every time for people, which is a little annoying! However, I do have a fun thing with numbers going on...each house/apartment I've rented outside of my parents' house has had an address ending in 6. All just by chance, but by this fourth time, it seemed a little like fate getting the place!
There is a little road near where I live that's called Lois Lane. It always makes me smile when I drive by it and wonder who came up with that name. They must have had a wonderful sense of humor :)
