Q: I am looking for a rocking horse for my toddler. I know she likes the one called "Rody," but wonder if readers have other ideas for well-designed rocking animals? It's such a large toy, that I want to get one that works well as a decoration, too (but is affordable). Thanks.

Editor: It's been awhile (2007) since we did a roundup of rocking horses, but I like this Riding Pino by Wonderworld. A more affordable option is the folding Tori. Readers, do you know of a rocking horse that fits Sarah's bill?

Ikea makes an adorable rocking Moose. And it's a steal at $40. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40085455
I got the ikea moose at a garage sale and my daughter loved it. I then picked up the plan toys arabian horse at amazon for a steal. http://www.amazon.com/Plan-Toy-Arabian-Rocking-Horse/dp/B000S5ZOVM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1307986887&sr=8-2
Both are great quality and both work really well. I just kept the plan toys one because i liked the way it looked more.
I was going to second the IKEA moose, but I guess I'm "thirding" it.
Another vote for the IKEA moose: strong, well-made & works really well. My daughter loves it.
We have the Mod Toddler rocking horse from Little Sapling on etsy and love it. It was featured a few years ago. Even young child can navigate on and off easily.

we bought the pier one rocking horse christmas 2007 for our just born (supposed to be born in the middle of january) baby who, of course, didn't have any presents (because she was NOT supposed to be a christmas baby). i'd always liked the super traditional look, and we actually were able to get it for 75% off -- so it was a great price :) "macaroni" has been in our living room since christmas 07 and people always comment about how nice he is & ask where i got him. i haven't noticed pier one having him in the last couple years, but before that they always had them at christmas time. good luck with your search! (for what it's worth, my child loves the rocking moose at IKEA :)
I second the Etsy reco from little sapling toys, my 13 month old son loves his.
I went the vintage way, got a 1960's wooden horse and refinished it. I remember paying 45 euros on eBay for it at the time.
I won't recommend it though. It may be beautiful, but it's high up the ground and not as sturdy as I wish it would be. Don't do as I did, buy a toy your child will love ! If I had to do it again, I'd buy the Ikea one in a heartbeat. Cute, playable, safe.
I learned the hard way that toys are one place not to go vintage.
I just love the Offi Baltic rocking horse, my sister had one as a toddler, and I can't wait to get one for my baby once he's here and big enough.
Thanks for all the great ideas. I'm liking Rody, but hadn't seen the IKEA one and will definitely check that out. Your thoughts are much appreciated.
We just bought the Plan Toys "Lusitano" horse on amazon.com. It's pretty small and actually looks nice in our living room. Our 15 month old loves it.
Have you heard of the Howdy Cow by Trumpette? I sell them at the baby boutique I work at and we have some on display for the kiddos to bounce around on. They are always a big hit, and they are only $35. I have one in black and not only does my 11 month old love it, but we do too!
More thanks for the additional ideas. Howdy Cow is adorable.
