If you'd like an option for your flat screen besides mounting directly onto the wall, check out this piece specificially made for flat TVs. We saw this one over on Freshome, and then saw another similar option over at Pottery Barn in their recent catalog.
This modern version, by Futura, retails for a very reasonable $599, and is on casters, so it could be moved quite easily if need be. It holds TVs up to 42" in size. The Pottery Barn model is $1,499, but may fit your decor better than the modern version might. It also has 2 more shelves on each of the side storage areas as it is 14" taller than the Futura model.

Out of curiosity, why do people prefer mounting a flat-screen to a piece of furniture to placing it in or on a piece of furniture? Is it because if you mount it you can ditch the stand?

Anne, also because you can have the television at a higher level than sitting on a media stand. It also gives the illusion of that nice streamlined wall-mounted feel without having to bust up your walls.

I really love the Futura stand pictured above, but in my apartment I use all light woods like birch and beech (i feel like it makes the place look bigger). Has anyone seen anything similar (in style and in price) to the Futura, but in a lighter wood? It seems most the entertainment stands I like only come in espresso.
