We just learned that Steinway provides customers with free piano templates. They're full-size floor plans of their pianos to use to verify that the piano will work in your home before purchase.
While buying a Steinway is a major decision...
we thought this idea would work well for other home furnishings, too. For instance, dining room tables, sofas, and bed frames. The purchase of these large furnishings warrants, we think, a "test drive" before purchase. Does anyone else think information like this would be helpful to consumers?

Excellent idea, but it still wouldn't tell you if it fits thru the doors or stairways.
That's a great idea indeed. Many interior designers use a similar technique to check furniture placement and there are paper templates for the rest of us to use and all we have to do is measure and draw out the room in question as well as non pro autocad programs for just the same.
I think it would be helpful. I've created my own floor plans for chairs I was thinking of buying. And I think someone here posted a floor plan for a rug to get feedback on the placement; I'll definitely try that with rugs in the future.
It would certainly be helpful for people like me, who can't visualize spaces that well. I always think I know how big a space is or how well something will fit and I am always, ALWAYS way off.
when i moved in to my apartment, i measured my furniture and taped their shape onto the floor using painters tape while the apartment was still empty...i was considering having some furniture shipped out from my grandfathers estate and that way, i knew exactly how everything would fit!
As a stage manager, I have spent a lot of time taping out ground plans in rehearsal halls (so the actors know where walls and such will be on the real set). I have always used tape on the floor in my own apartment before buying furniture or rearranging large pieces. It makes it much easier to decide when you can see the shape in space!
This is a great idea for apt/house hunting if a lot of the places you're looking at happen to be empty. You could make templates of your exisiting furniture, see how things would actually lay out.
Hmm, boyfriends should come with life-size cardboard cut-outs so you can hang out with them for a few days before committing to the real thing.

Not only do I tape the dimension on the floor... I map out the dims on the wall too! I currently have the outline of my intended sofa on the wall outlining my current sofa. It helps me get the feel of the shape and how much space it will take up.
On the downside, my neighbor stopped by and asked if was a crime scene!!!
Hmmmmm----I'm not apt to be buying a grand piano anytime soon, but that template almost looks good enough to put on a wall. . . .
