Q: We rent our home so we try to do as little damage as possible to the walls. We have a 47" flat screen tv AND a toddler. We're looking for a way to mount the television with a nice yet affordable piece of furniture like the Newkirk from West Elm (which unfortunately is no longer available). And, since we're childproofing, it shouldn't have glass doors either!

Editor: I was going to suggest the Bestå Boås at Ikea but they recommend you secure the entire unit to your wall which is what you are trying to avoid. Has anyone seen something similar to the Newkirk console?

One benefit to glass doors is that kids can't play with any A/V equipment you might have. We have a toddler as well, and glass doors are a requirement for our next TV stand thing.
But yeah, good question!
We have both the BESTA from IKEA and the TOBO from IKEA. We are not fans of BESTA bc its very low and our toddler can touch the screen etc so I would not recommend it. The TOBO however is great. We got the babyproofing things that are used for ovens/fridge to keep the glass doors shut. I think that is better option bc having them out and open they can also push all the buttons etc.
Hmmm, TOBO is interesting, but don't love the look of the legs! May need to search Ikea hacks for some ideas!
I really like the idea of this - even though we own our home, this seems like an easier way to mount a tv.
I'm guessing there would already be a bracket in place and we wouldn't have to hunt for studs through a plaster wall? And we could tuck all the cords behind! Perfect.
Maybe this is something you could DIY? Buy a nice solid wood console and if you are handy add the back piece on, drill holes, add bracket, stain, etc?
i think your still suppose to brace it to the wall even on a stand.
we have a old tv and its in a cabinet. doors are now off because of kids messing with them. and we leave the coffee table in front of the tv to baracade the kids from buttons.
find one that touches the ground...digging for toys under the cabinet is not fun yet a daily ;)
I really hate Walmart but I've been looking for a similar wall unit and have found that Walmart has some decent options. Ikea has some cool stuff but where I live it costs 3x as much as the product to have something shipped here.
Was at Ikea this weekend and spied the latest Expedit TV Stand...it was great but OF COURSE it was sold out! http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30218111/
